Of those whose car is finished, how many had it undercoated and how many had it painted? I would kind of like to have mine painted but I really don't need the extra expense and I plan on driving it a lot.

I painted mine so that's what I'll vote.   It didn't cost me much more except for the extra paint as I did it myself. For a true driver type car the undercoating will probably require the least maintenance. Paint does get more attention though.

i under coated mine,still need to patch a dime size hole in the floor,then re coat-easier to keep clean on a driver

Yea, but you probably won't be meticulous about the paint if you're just going to undercoat it, right? I mean maybe a double coat of primer would suffice.

I painted mine years ago. I would like to drop everything back out and hose it down with that spray in truck bed liner.

I think paint looks killer.
When I start the underside I will see if I can get the old coating off easily and if so, painting the underside will be my choice.
For a daily driver undercoating would be more practical, as said before :)

If you do paint it don't paint the entire underside body color.  Seal the primer with a good sealer then fog in the color from the edges.  It is the way it was done.

I like the painted look. In my opinion, cars that have the undercoating appear to me that they are hiding something. Painted finish is all open for anyone to see. Just use a very good quality paint system.

Coat. The paint definitely looks nicer but if you paint it, then you'll be afraid to drive it. I built mine to drive!  :drive:

Personally for a car that is driven... undercoat is the way to go, its easier to clean/ maintain, and undercoat also acts as a sound deadner, you will notice a difference on a coated car versus a non coated, and lastly look at how good factory coated cars lasted.... my charger was daily driven by a lady... I bought it to restore, the fact she drove it daily and it never sat up, along with factory undercoat the bottom is rust free, solid as a rock.

Too much road salt in PA not to undercoat it. Im gonna overspray some paint on the bottom then undercoat it. Possibly shoot Rhino Lining on as the undercoat...

For a driver, I would under coat it like I am to mine. One unseen paint chip underneath, you might not see it until it gets way rusty!

I would paint mine as well, but I would prime and paint, It will never see another winter on the road, so I am quite sure this should be enough protection.

Mine was a factory undercoat car so I will be undercoating it.  Plus the fact that I intend to drive it a lot.  No trailer queen here.

Mine was factory undercoated and Zebarted when new but it's going to be a good weather driver( when the weather is good here in PA) so I'm painting mine.It is a Black car anyway which makes it easier.A few runs here and there won't hurt anyway,that is the way Mother Mopar painted them.

Since mine will never see winter or rain again and will only be driven on the odd nice summer night or weekend I'm going with full paint. Put too much effort into this resto to hide it under undercoating. Just my opinion.

after all the work thats been done back there . i plan on using   eastwoods   rust encapsulster. that leaves it a nice satan black. then i will coat it with rubber undercoating. the stuff that came from the factory sucked. alot of times water got between the undercoating and the metal and rusted everything out . thats what happened to my 68 r/t. i had to replace just about every panel. Just did mine with Zero Rust which is similar to por15/rust encapsulator. Nice satin finish. I'll be using the 3M rubberized undercoating in the wheel wells for sound absorption and rock chip protection.

im sure people will argue my version of what i do, but i did this to all three of my cars......i drive my cars a lot!   and i cruise al the time.      first what i do is  get a power washer, home depot(200bucks)    i have one anyway but i put the car on jackstands in front of house and power wash complete underside of car and let it dry completey for a day or so......then i just go buy about 20 cans of black spray paint and hit the entire underside of the car, and the wheel wells as well.  some say it may look stupid or isnt done that way but it looks good to me.

Currently having new trunk pans / trunk extensions / new rear frame rail / new rear valence / new rear valence corners and maybe new quarters welded in. I'm going with the primer and paint for the "over restored" look as car the will never be on the road again in winter. Way too much salt on the road in NYC during harsh months!

Just primer is able to catch moisture and then rust begins... again, for driver, PAINT and then UNDERCOAT... everybody says different reasons why to do it, and all are corrects... sound deadner, HEAT deadner, RUST deadner, also CHIPS deadner ( LOL )

After that I do the same as 1968 Charger B5... but only paint on wheel wells and visible areas.

bull, are you really gonna do that much driving to where painted belly would matter, we're talking thousands of miles a summer and driving in the rain to where it would matter.   I have enuf friends with overhead lifts that you can use to clean up say once a year.   That's what they do with their painted belly cars.

Other than getting caught in the rain every once in a great while I don't really forsee the car needing it. Unfortunately the price I was quoted for a paint job does not include the bottom, and I have to assume that would add thousands to the price. It has undercoating right now and I can't say I'm too excited about removing it. We'll see. Maybe you'll talk me into it.
