Air cleaner suggestions................

Hi all -

Need to get an air cleaner for my 383.  I have a Holley Street Dominator intake with a Holley carb and a 1" spacer.  I have noticed in some past threads that the spacers might be a problem if you are using a hood pad.  I have a pad that I have not installed yet as the hood is not on.   I do not have a stock air cleaner, so I don't have a clue if that will fit or not.  If anyone has some suggestions, I would like to pick something up here soon.

Thanks,

Ryan

I don't know how much this will help, but I've had some issues with a drop base air cleaner made by K&N as it was pinching the fuel line on my Edelbrock carb.   What kind of "look" are you going for?   I would consider getting the smallest raised base with a shorter air cleaner element (say 2") and maybe get one of those K&N filtercharger tops to make up for the smaller element.   Just my two cents since nobody else has spoken up.  I

Drop base air cleaners are a little batter with Holley carbs as the fuel inlet is placed at a downward angle as opposed to coming straight out.
Interestingly, the Edelbrock air cleaner on my car interfered with the fuel line on my Eddy carb but of course, not my Holley.
I think it's a marketing gimmick to force you to buy the "banjo" style fuel inlet fitting that they sell.

You could use the KN 14x3 with the filter top. Go with the 1 1/4 drop base for hood clearance. The filter top helps with a carb that has a choke horn. The drop base will put the choke horn to close to the lid and restrict airflow into the primary venturies....the flo-thru top corrects that issue.

I run a similar combo: Lowdeck, Holley 870, Street Dominator.

I don't run a spacer though, only a 5/16" insulator.

For an aircleaner, I use a 1" drop base with a 1/2" spacer, giving a net drop of 1/2". Element is a 14x3.5" K&N.

No problem on hood clearance other than the wingnut poking a hole in the pad. In addition, I was also using the stock kick down linkage and throttle cable with only minor modification, before I installed the 5 speed.

Firefighter makes a good point about choke horn clearance. You have to watch that with a drop base.

I've also run a factory dual snorkel using a Ford Motorsports drop base for a sleeper look. Choke horn to lid clearance was less than one inch though.

Thanks for all the replies, I ordered the 14"x3" KN, 1.25 drop, with filter lid assembly as well, kind of pricey, but different.  Never used anything like this, hope it is not one of those gimmicks like the  Tornado......    :icon_smile_big:

Not even a little similar.  I use a K&N filter and the flow through top on an Edelbrock drop base and there is a difference.  Some say it's snake oil but I'm happy with mine.
