Just bought a 71 Dodge Charger with a 383 and was wondering what emissions they had on that year. In looking at the engine there are several  items that don't quite look right as far as being OE. I would kike to install duel exhaust, a 4 barrel and electronic ignition to get a little better preformance. I  know these Cali devices are affecting the performance of the engine.

A '71 383-2 would have the following emissions devices:

-Lowered compression ratio
-Increased overlap camshaft
-Recalibrat6ed carburetors and chokes
-Vapor Saver fuel system
-Heated air cleaner
-Distributor solenoid
-NOx system
-Temperature operated vacuum bypass valve (only on 383-2 with AT and A/C)
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Yeah, there's a green looking thing on the front of the valley pan by the distributor. Not sure where everything else is located

Don't forget noise emissions.  No straight back exhaust tips, turn downs only and silenced air breather.

Take it all off.  You don't have to smog that car.  :icon_smile_big: If it's 1975 or older it is smog exempt.  :yesnod:

Actually, '75 and earlier isn't smog exempt but it is Smog Check exempt.

I live in Yakima, WA. No smog required on pre 72's. My plan is go with an electroinic ignition with an MSD box, duel exhaust which I've already done, Edelbrock Performer with an Edelbrock 625.

myk

Make that a Performer RPM, as the regular "Performer" really doesn't...
