What's the quietest muffler to use? Add headers or no?

I scored a set of ceramic coated headers, polished Performer and electronic ignition for my '78 Fury.  I'd like to use the headers and increase the power rating from 135 to anything higher, but I do NOT want a loud car.  I am willing to sacrifice performance for sound.  To me, 165 hp muffled is better than 185 loud.   What mufflers should I use?  Should I bring two into one and ditch the dual exhaust?  My fuel tank may prohibit the duals.

Dynomax Super Turbos with dual 2.25in exhaust will be pretty quiet and let that motor breathe a little.  :yesnod:

That's what I have.  Make sure you add a crossover pipe to keep it even quieter

I'd like to ask the opposite of this question.  I've got the stock manifolds and pipe diameters, I just had an H pipe and a pair of 'Ultra-flows installed and the car seems too quiet for me; I know some '289 Mustangs that sound like they could eat my Charger for breakfast.  I'll take performance over sound any day, but what system/setup could I use to give this machine a stronger sound profile without sacrificing power?  Is it just the type of mufflers?  Pipe diameter?  A little bit 'o everything?

mostly muffler type . I use 2.25 on small blocks , 2.5 on most big blocks & 3" on performance 400s & larger strokers
Hooker Aero Chambers have a nice sound & are good quality

Thanks for the tips.  Turns out the headers I was going to buy are for a Charger only and will not fit my Fury.  Back to my original idea of using 360 exhaust manifolds.  Someone told me that exhaust manifolds out of an 89 Dakota 318 were hipo...that sound right or snake oil?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Magnum engine manifolds are an improvement over the original manifolds.  Don't know if there would be any issues with getting them to fit but they are plentiful.

I have heard the Magnum mainfolds are better too.

I have wondered if the stainless steel Magnum truck shorty headers that you see on Ebay all the time would bolt up and work in the older cars. They go relatively cheap for stainless and have to flow better than the manifolds.

Wakko, I agree. I have used Super Turbos and they are very quiet. Just put an "X" pipe in that system and you will be surprized of the performance difference and the low noise. Like MYK says; his is too quiet with the "H" pipe. The "X" pipe scavanges MUCH better and kills resonation. I vote 2.25 duals, "X" pipe and Super Turbos from Dynomax.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

2.25 and the super turbos (duels), no X or H pipes and the 360 is pretty much as quiet as my little 4 banger sunfire.

How does the Super turbos compare to stock Hemi Mufflers in sound and performane?
I am also looking for the  QUIETEST  Mufflers that would be Correct application for my 440 6 Pak.
