Is there a noticable difference in driving characteristics, noise or shifting, between the 2 transmissions. Maybe its my rear gear ratio but my charger feels like I'm driving a 2 ton truck.  A really fast 2 ton truck.  Its been a while since I've had a 4 speed car and the last 1 was a 23 spline.  I'm changing the rear gear set this weekend.  The dana had 4.88s installed when I purchased it and I thought they would be fun to play with for a while but now its time to replace them with 3.73. I'm hoping this will remove some of the 'truck' feeling.

I don't really understand your question about the difference between spline count and driving Characteristics, but if it drives like a 2 ton truck that would be the suspension and not so much the transmission, the A-833's are not tremecs they are not quiet like most of the current day made transmissions, the rear ratio 4.88 is a not what I would call a car street usable gear but I sure some one has run it before on the street, check out this link it has the ratio's for the A-833: http://www.autohobbydigest.com/a-4spd.html you could end up with a few different first gear ratios that you maybe could tell the difference in first gear.

I've been told that there should be no difference in feel between the two.  The only reason I've been told to get the 18 spline is if you're going over 500 rwhp.

The 18 spline in my Charger shifts and acts the same as my dad's 23 spline 383 Super Bee.

I really think its the rear gear set.  I'm changing it out now and hopefully the 373's will improve drivability.
