Oregon city trying to battle against Nike is getting its butt kicked

The idiots in charge of the city of Beaverton, Oregon decided a few years ago that they were going to annex the Nike campus come hell or high water. Now, almost $500,000 tax dollars payed in court fees later, they are discovering that they've probably bitten off more than they can chew. All so they can grab more money in taxes by incorporating another big business into their city limits. Their police force already acts like the one in Hazzard County with the most aggressive ticketing campaign in the state. I just get tired of goverment doing all they can to grab more and more of our tax dollars. It seems to me that it's the sole purpose of government anymore, to use any tactic available to get more of the private sector's money.

It's everywhere, in my state a town is trying to buy an airport from a family that has owned it for over 70 years. The town says it will go as far as to comdem it, if they have to, and they have a 22 million dollar bond to buy it.  the town wants to make sure it does not become a jetport and ruin the quality of life, blah blah blah. The family DOES NOT wish to sell,  they probably would not ever expand to that point (3 major airports within a hours drive. AND the biggest reason is  (IMO) if you (the townspeople) moved in/bought your home whatever After the airport was built YOU SHOULD HAVE NO SAY!!!. Anyone forcing these people to sell/give up their land should be *&^$$#. Next time buy a home away from an airport, or don't buy a house next to a pig farm and complain about the smell.

Some friends of ours just dropped $550k on a house in the 3rd ring suburbs and they have a nice pond (drainage overflow) in the backyard with a train track behind that.  they said the freight trains only goes by 16 times a day and its no big deal, they are already used to it! :icon_smile_big:       :-\

Near Joplin, Missouri, a guy moved in near the Mokan drag strip that has been there for close to 40 years and decided that it should be shut down since it was a nuisance. To make a very long story short...he lost. Now that's rare.
Unfortunately the laws in Arkansas are written so that no one can build a new racing facility anywhere in the state, unless you're name is Mark Martin. That's another story for another time.

This is tangentially related (eminent domain) but voters are kickin' up a fuss at government appropriation in quite a few jurisdictions.  Including Louisiana: http://www.katc.com/Global/story.asp?S=5481488

Sounds like what's happening with Drop Top - although they want the land instead of the corporate taxes. It's all the same though because they'll be getting the taxes from whatever they build there once they get it. My guess is Nike located there to avoid the city government so I'm glad they are fighting it. Most cities seem to price themselves right out of contention when it comes to luring new businesses in. I'm sure just the word Nike has someone out there itching to rail against evil corporations so I'm anxiously waiting to read the opinions (I need a good laugh). Don't even get me started on people who move next to an airport (or under the primary flight path) and then complain about the noise...

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

It's the same thing with urban sprawl where housing developments start popping up next to dairy farms and then the people who buy the houses start whining about the smell. Wasn't the dairy farm there the day they went to look at the house?

Also, we passed an initiative here in Oregon recently requiring the state govt. to reimburse private landowners the real market value if they decide they need it for some project. I don't recall whether the landowner is required to sell but when they do sell they are supposed to paid what the land is worth. http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/nov22004/guide/meas/m37_text.html Of course now the state is trying to poke holes in the law because they don't want to pay what the land is worth when they take it.

A similar thing happened near my home. The neighboring town used to host an air show complete with all the cool WWII stuff from Mustangs to B-17s and the Coast Guard showed up with one of their rescue helicopters to do a demonstration, etc., and some sniveling pansies cried about the noise and so they shut it down. What kind of pussy can't handle the sound of an old prop plane for one friggin' day to celebrate our nation's history? It's pathetic.

Now they're arguing about it on the west side of town because a vintage war plane crashed last summer and all the noise whiners who were ignored before are emboldened because a house got wiped out. http://www.oregonlive.com/metrowest/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/metro_west_news/1159847725262800.xml&coll=7 A plane crash is obviously more serious than noise but I just don't see why people have to ban everything when there's a small inconvenience once every 365 days, or in the case of the crash, once in 20 years.

Bull this province used to haev TONNES of airshows in every major city! Now, 90% of them are shut down because people didn't like the noise of the jets flying overhead once year! Yet the people doing the complaining were all NEW residents of the cities!

Look at Eugene Oregon, They have hyundai there but shaft them at every chance they get. They messed with the hospital for so long they moved across I-5 to Springfield. SO now Springfield with 50,000 people has two hospitals and Eugene with 120,000 people has none. Good job Eugene! Springfield also had Sony until they closed.

Also why is it that people always move in to a place, and then start complaining, and why do they almost always get their damn way? Whiners need to shut the hell up!

Because in these backward days the whiners will win in cort (sometimes) and the last person in gets to rule the town. Thanks in part to juries and lawyers and judges.
