How do I set initial timing after distributor/crank pulley have been removed?

I'm doing a gasket reseal on another engine, it's a 4 cylinder. I replaced the timing cover gasket and front crank seal, so the crank pulley was removed and turned. I also replaced the distributor o-ring. Before I did that, the timing cover was still off, but now it's already sealed up. When removing the distributor, first I took the cap off and marked the distributor body, and the block where the metal tip of the rotor was pointing. Well when I reinstalled the distributor it wouldn't go back in that way, it had to be turned back to mesh with the gear. So now I know the timing is totally off. I still have to install the crank pulley. Is there a way to set the initial timing when I get the crank pulley back on, without messing anything up?
