I need new rear brake shoes. The local parts store's have this "Quality" brand brake shoe, or Raybestos shoes to fit my 73. Looking online I can get Bendix shoes from Advance Auto Parts, they say I can pick them up at the local store. Anyone have a preference for replacement brake shoes?

This is just me but I would go with a known brand such as Raybestos, Bendix, or Wagner.  Chances are they are better made parts.

I use Raybestos , I have had problems with Wagner in the past

And make sure they are RIVITED, NOT bonded.. I have replaced MANY< MANY drums that were eaten by steel on steel when the bonded shoes gave up the ghost. I have only seen a hand full of cracked rivited shoes in my life..

By the way. I used to be a NY state inspector.

I went with the Raybestos shoes. They are riveted. I picked up a spring kit and new self adjuster cables. I did the left side first. It went together fine. Something strange is happening on the right side. When it's all assembled the self adjuster lever is sitting well below the adjuster star wheel, and the cable has slack in it. It looks like the adjuster cable is too long. I put one of the old cables on and the adjuster lever was right on the star wheel. So I took back the new cable and got another one. it does the same thing. So I bent the spring holder part of the adjuster cable assembly to let the spring compress a little more. Never had to do that before. Now the lever is right on the star wheel.

Whats up with that?

the cable could be for a 11" system instead of the 10.5"

I have 11" brakes. We checked the cable for the 10.5" brakes at the store. It was considerably shorter than the one for the 11" brakes. ????
