Because bad guys need to look cool and sinister.  Plus they need to go really really fast.  Since they are so fast, the only way for them to be stopped is by killing the Charger.

Trivia for
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974)
The famous getaway car featured in the film is a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T with a 440 cubic inch V-8 engine. For musclecar buffs, the color of the Charger is "Limelight" yellow (actually, a fluorescent yellow-green). The black stripe on the side of the car is NOT a "factory" racing stripe (rather one painted on by the crew), and the wheels are classic "American Racing" brand wheels.

Three Chargers were used in the film; Two 1969 Dodge Chargers (one "R/T" and one coupe), and one 1968 Dodge Charger (coupe). Two of the Chargers were intentionally damaged in the front (after a scene where the Charger collided with the truck), and there is a notable difference in the damage from car to car

Six 1972 Dodge Polara 440 V-8 police cars were purchased from the California Highway Patrol for use in the film. All were destroyed during various jumps, rollovers, and crashes.

Good info except the paint was not "limelight yellow" Where do people GET this stuff? It was Curious Yellow!

YEAH if I can find another 69 Charger, THAT is THE car!

I built this one earlier this year. It won a first place the last show I took it to! My favorite TV/Movie car EVER!

SRT-440

Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry is kinda like a porno to me..I fast forward to all the good parts (read: Charger scenes).  O0

After we saw that movie at the theatre, I tried like hell to get my girlfriend to change her name to Mary.
Didn't work. But on the bright side, we're still together.

I seen that movie way back in the mid 70's at the Drive in, Also Vanishing point & Gone in 60 seconds. 3 great movies. If you look closely at the DMCL movie you will see the car change from a 69 to a 68 & back to 69. Odd I thought. That Challenger in Gone in 60 seconds changes from a 70 r/t big block to 74 r/t big block, Impossible. Guess they figured back then nobody could read Vins anyways? LEON. ???

THE CHARGER PUNK

actually hampton 4 of the cars were 440 4-spd 70 chally r/ts all white with houndstooth interior and the 5th was matching as well cept it was a 383 column shift car, the car used for the crash was a 69 camaro, all the challengers were brand new at the time-MATT

Your talking about Vanishing point, I was talking about gone in 60 seconds when they switch vins on that Red R/T repo in beginning. LEON.

Yep, this movie is the one that started my love affair with the Charger. I remember seeing it on TV in around 78 or 79? on Saturday action theatre (local tv station) and I was hooked. It wasnt long until the DOH premiered, but my muscle car bias was already set. I love the slot mags, the funky green yellow and stripe and  the way Peter Fonda and Adam Rourke tried to ditch Susan George. She was such a pain.

THE CHARGER PUNK

oh leon yeah, it was 2 70 challenger r/ts one 440 and other a 383 both had sadmouth grilles and tail panels but everyhting else was 70 r/t-MATT

The seen just before the cop car goes into the water....
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

I think the biggest mistake of all in "VP" was using a 71 challenger on the movie poster.

Jeeze  they even had to burn the Charger in the movie poster :rotz:

Ghoste

They were plentiful, cheap, 5 year old used cars back then.  (doesn't make it right though)
