How much is a 8 3/4 posi worth?

I need a rear end and have possibly found a 8 3/4 posi I think, that is being checked on.
How much are these typically worth for posi and peg leg? I don't really have a choice but
would just like to know.

Thanks

Depends on the ratio and case # and weather its a clutch type Sure-Grip or cone type Sure-Grip

3.23's with a 489 case & cone type range from $250-$350

Anything numerically higher (3.55, 3.91, 4.10) and or a 742 case & clutch type range from $350 & up

PS----its a SURE-GRIP....not posi (GM name )

Thanks for the info. So $425 plus shipping from Illinois is to much? I'm located in Coon Rapids, Mn and can't seem to find
anything. I have no idea about the case number or ratio. I'm working with a boneyard and having a hard time getting
them to tell me if it is SURE GRIP or not.

Thanks

Ok, not to be an asshole or anything, but Mopar people commonly refer to such rear differentials as "Sure-Grip" rather than "Posi" (Short for Posi-traction), which is/was exclusively a General Motors term. :flame:

Normally, if I hear a person refer to a Sure Grip as a Posi, it usually indicates the person in question knows very little, or cares very little about what they're talking about. :rotz:

That being said, a used Sure-grip differential can be worth up to $600 depending on condition, year and whether it is a clutch type, or cone type. Different years have a different type.
A Non Sure Grip would be worth half of that. :icon_smile_big:

So basically you're looking at an 8¾ chuck that could be an empty shell for all you know for $425?

There are lots of used rears out there.....check the classifieds here or over @ Moparts.com

eBay has a lot on there usually as well....

If you want Randy's Ring & Pinion or Mancini Racing has new complete units in any ratio you want for around $950.....

Just to add something here: that price ($950) is for all NEW insides that is professionally assembled and guaranteed. Just the sure grip unit is over $400 new. So, if you buy a used one for $425 and have to pay for new gears, new sure-grip, and installation you're worse off than spending the extra cash for a new one. For the price and lack of information on the used one I'd have it inspected in person before sending them a dime OR make sure you can treturn it if it isn't what they described. Otherwise I'd pass.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Old School you from the COON?   I have a '69 8-3/4 peg leg  laying around if you need one.  but its gonna cost ya :icon_smile_big:

Ya I'm from the COON. I'm gonna see what these guys come up with for numbers. They said it would run 575 shipped. I asked
them for the case numbers and so on. Just waiting. If you're serious about the peg leg I might be interested. To me it doesn't really matter
what rear end I have in the car. Right now I just need something. I have a 74 with a 8 1/4 and a 73 up at my sisters with nothing. Hence the
problem. They are moving so if I want to keep the car I need to put a rear end in it so i can haul it home.

Thanks

It seems the "sure grip" /  "posi" definition deal was brought up already, actually in the first reply to his post, and much more eloquently I might add.

If the guy didn't care he wouldn't be going through such lengths to learn about these now would he!

I know this isn't answering your question at all but I have an on topic question to ask....My '70 has a 742 case 8 3/4" rear non sure-grip and I most definately want a sure grip rear.  My father had a '69 SE in high school with a 489 case sure grip 8 3/4" rearend that just so happens to be in the garage right beside mine.  Can I put the center chunk from his into mine and would it work?  My guess is no but I could very well be wrong.  also, which case is the more desireable one?  Thanks ahead of time :icon_smile_big:

Just 6T9 CHGR

Yes you can......it is a direct swap.
Actually the 489 case is "correct" for '70

The 742 case ended in '68

Old School if you're just looking for any 8 3/4 rear end, I'm stripping a '66 over here on the other side of Champlin.  The car's on the trailer so you can get to it easy enough.  My guess is it's a 3.23 or 2.94 open but it's there if you need one in a hurry.  Let me know.  I'm gonna squash the car as soon as possible.
