440 is not going to happen... but.... got offered a 383

I was offered a 1970 383 carb to pan with about 77,000 miles on it for $250. I think it's a great deal and was curious on a build up for it. It has all the AC and brackets and everything still on it, so no witch hunt will be needed for parts.

I was keeping my hopes up for a 440, however, i've been told that some real power can be made with a 383. So who out there has a 383 and what did you do to it? are there any down sides to going with a 383 over a 440?

I know where a 440 is with 40,000 miles on it.  It came out of a motorhome (mid '70's).

have a 383 in the charger right now...      30 over....      stock cam...       9:1 compression....     cleaned up heads ...      makes 272hp and 333tq at the rear wheels...     decent for a street combo with no cam...      not for the power hungry crowd though...       thats why I got the 496 going together....

the drawback is lack of torque with the shorter stroke 383 but it will make power , A good simple build is all that is needed cam & heads will increase power the most , use forged 9.8 pistons , Speed Pro has them , balance it with a windage tray , port the iron heads & pick the right cam to match the combo
