Pics of 71 heater valve (to suit A/C)....anyone ???

G'day guys,

still after anyone who might have pictures of the heater valve (on the rubber heater hoses in the engine compartment), and the associated vacuum tubing - more to the point, where they go. For an A/C car I might add.

Also, I've noticed Year One sell a heater valve for 71's, but it's a cable operated one. Is it still possible to get the vacuum operated ones and what's the difference ? ???

here is a wire operated valve that I sold ( 4 of them ) some time ago

The valve in my picture is the stock valve and you cannot get those kind anymore. The valve in Scott W's picture is available and will work  but I dont think its the "correct" valve for a 71 Charger.

G'day Todd,

do you have a close uppictureof your heater valve ? I'm not too fussed if I can't get the exact original type. I would just like to find one that suits the vacuum tube.

If I'm looking on Ebay and the like, am I right in searching for "71 Heater Valve"? Is that what you guys call them ?

As far as I know the 71's used the vacuum actuated valve. My 71 is 99% original and has it, the pic I posted is a of an unrestored 71 R/T formerly owned by a member. I thought that the cable operated valve started in 72 and was changed to non-ceramic in 73-74.  ???

Todd I wonder if yours is a replacement part, then again so could mine.

The vacuum actuated valve comes up on ebay every now and again. An aftermarket version of cable operated valve is available from Year One and other major automotive parts houses.

Scott, you are right. Vacuum operated in 71, cable in 72. The one I posted in my pic is from a green 71 at the Carlisle show who seems to win our class in the fun field every year. I had one like it on my 71, however the side cracked on it and started spewing anti freeze all over my freshly painted engine compartment >:(. The only replacement one I could find looks like the one Todd posted.

those pictures are graet - thanks so much. I don't suppose you could tell me where the hose on the valve goes to - does it matter which of the 2 hoses from the firewall is connected to it, and does the other just need to go to a vacuum point ?

Also, whereabouts would I get a valve like yours ? Only p[laces like Ebay, or are they sold somewhere ? As I've mentioned before, I've got no other cars here to compare to so your pictures are a great help.

I haven't worked on my 71 for almost a year due to lack of time and funds. I'll have to check on the hoses, IIRC they are two different sizes, 1/2" and 5/8".
Also the A/C system was missing from my Charger when I bought it 11 years ago. Only thing still on it was the compressor. Because of the sky high cost of parts these days and the fact we only have two weeks of summer up here I'm not putting the A/C system back in my 71.

You got lucky finding one of those.   As far as I know the one on my 71 is the factory type.   Those other pictures seem like the vacuum part is fatter.  I robbed  a few off old 71 coronets years ago to have as spares as my original unit died on me years ago. Thats the 100$ question  what is that other vacuum valve off of?

I don't believe any of the '71 b-body a/c big block cars got the cable activated valves.. I believe they were all of the vacuum source-type like on my previous '71 R/T.
The E-bodies had the cables....... The over-the-counter parts replacement is the little dashpot vacuum variety...

Here's the only pic I got from engine bay of my 1971, with AC and 318 CI engine. The heater valve is kind of hiden by air filter box on this pic...  ::)

I dont think any of the 71's were cable actuated either. BUT  now another question comes up were there 2 vacuum valves? A big block and a small block valve? I have seen tons of valves like mine out there and I believe mine was original to the car. It is not like the bigger vacuum pot on Whiteys?!?!

One more question on the subject of these damned vacuum heater valves......

the hose coming off the heater valve (rubber vacuum hose) goes where ? For those with A/C cars if you could just have a look and tell me which pipe it goesto. I know it goes down low on the firewall to where there's a little rubber gasket with 2 tubes coming out, but which of these 2 tubes actually goes to the vacuum connection on the carby (orvaccum on inlet etc), and which goes to the heater valve?

Does it matter at all ???

By the way....I am making progress with all this kind of stuff. Starting to understand what's going on in the engine compartment.

Hey there Peter......

Yes, there is a grommet coming through the firewal for the vacuum line. Neither one goes to the carb if memory serves me. One goes to the valve and the other one goes to the vacuum can/reservoir under the battery tray.. I believe my service manual shows a picture of it..........   The carb supplies vacuum to the reservoir.........

Thanks very much for your help Troy,

I actually removed that can under the battery tray, because I thought someone had added it on. Does the can actually do anything special ? Since removing it I have simply routed one of the hoses from the firewall to a vacuum outlet on the carb (I have an Edelbrock 750) and the other hose is blocked off awaiting a new heater valve.

I actually thought that "can" was meant for pop up headlights - which I don't have - and therefore took it off. If it does something special though I'll put it back on.
