Can I take a dana 60 carrier out of Ford truck and install it into a mopar auto dana rear end ?                                   Thanks.

daytonalo

It was just done by another member , look under aero section

Thanks for the reply but I can't seem to find the thread you're referring to.Could you be a little more specific.Would be greatly appreciated.

Chryco Psycho

it can be done , just a question of the number of axle splines

Thanks again guys but I think you may have misunderstood. I currently have a dana 60 housing (snubber pad ) out of a 60s mopar auto, and a 4-10 gear and carrier out of a early 90s ford truck. Are these compatable.I have been a chevy guy for a long time ,but this mopar stuff is really winning me over. This is going in a 69 charger.I want to do this car right.  THANX

Pete, if the ford gears and suregrip unit are from a dana 60 3rd member then yes, it will swap in. The only issue is the side gears where the axles slide in. The spline count and axle diameter must be the same. If it turns out that they are not the same then you will need to change the sidegears (to fit the axles) or the axles (to fit the sidegears) for a proper fit. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ron, That is what  I needed to know. Now, next question. Are the side gears the only things to change.(30 spline to 35 spline)I plan on purchasing some after market axles. Is it a big or difficult job. Thanks again.

PeteBratt

Afterthought.Should I leave the 30 spline side gears and have the axles made to suit.Your thoughts are greatly appreciated

Pete, if you plan on driving the car hard now or are planning upgrades in the future....go with the 35 spline axles and matching sidegears. That's what i ended up doing when mine was being rebuilt. Strange makes a bulletproof street/strip axle set that costs about $300.00 for the pair. I also went with the green bearings and had those pressed onto the axles. The green bearings eliminate the need for a preload adjustment...you just bolt them in and go. No need to pack them either because they're a "sealed" unit. The nice thing about the Dana is that once it's built you never have to worry about it ever again.  :icon_smile_cool:

Thanks Ron .By the way my name is Al ,I m using my sons email address. Are the side gears the onlly things I have to purchase for the carrier, and is it difficult to change these gears. Also,do I use the ring and pinion from the Ford dana that came with the carrier.                     Thanks again.

firefighter3931

Hi Al, yes you can use the ring and pinion from the ford 3rd member. If you plan on reusing the B-body axles then you will most likely need to swap out the side gears. The Factory Service Manual is a good source for R&R info.
