Death threats driving my Gen/Lee

Driving slowly in traffic in my local town yesterday when I heard a young black guy effing and blinding telling me he was gonna kill me if I so much as looked at him and continued to do so as he walked backwards down the street making throat cutting gestures at me.

Don't want to start a war on here ....just interested to know if any one has experienced or know of anyone having had negative vibes around the Gen Lee.

I was sumwhat bemused as I was blissfully unaware of the connotations the BIG FLAG on the roof had till my wife enlightened me.

I'm not too concerned but the wife is, and tells me I've gotta sell the car............yeh right.

Tell the young coloured fella next time you see him that you are trying to create awareness as to the hardships his people have endured in America.   

Then put a Black Panther bumper sticker on the back of your '69 Charger.

remind him its a free country, while your kicking his ass. seriously,  thats pretty bad. it's a tv show. he cant tell me that he hasnt seen it. and the flag, its a symbol of the south anymore. he must have failed history because he doesnt know the war is over. as much as one sees that flag, he must put in a long day putting it down everytime he sees it.

I drive a General and have never had a negative response...

In fact the last time I took it out, a group of black guys were cheering and giving me the thumbs out from a pub window while I was at the lights.

I have a GL and have only run into this once in 3 years.  The guy was yelling at me and calling me racesist and all that.  I looked at him and said what was racesist about the show and the car.  He said it was the flag, I said the flag has nothing to do with racism except for those KKK morons.  I said the flag stood for the south just like the north flag was the US flag that we wave today, do you think if the south won the civil war we would be waving the confederate flag today, maybe.  Anyways this was a guy that worked where I did, the next week he got fired for sexual harrasment, sure makes you wonder huh.

First car show I went to all these "THUGS" in red came up and I thought for sure they would say something. Then they all posed in front of the car and ask me to take there picture! They all talked about how they grew up on that show....guess they didnt learn from it? I personally carry a concealed permit and a .32 just incase someone ever wanted to do something stupid. For some reason having a general lee in Arkansas brings out the "red neck" attitude and people think they can open doors or sit on the hood and when you ask them not too they get mad. I would just rather be safe than sorry!

I live 20 Min's from Detroit and I never seen a Gen/Lee car ever on the streets. Yes that flag stands for racism lots of people think. Its sad people can't understand that most just like the car from the TV show.

Just recently I had witnessed a bad experience with a GL. I was with Travis Bell and we were somewhere in Georgia. We stop in a gas station to get gas and a car with three blacks cruise by admiring it. They were stopping, rolling forward, stopping, not watching what in front of them, just looking at the car. They almost ran Travis over with the car.Taken by surprise at what was happening, he got their attention by slamming a quart of oil he was carrying on the hood of their car. They stopped quick, just missing him by an inch (literally). Travis yells "Hey! watch the road! What if I was a little kid? He'd be dead!" The problem was his scared reaction slamming the hood of the car dented it severely, and the guy driving had to be macho about it. He started yelling, threatening, was saying he was calling the police because the General Lee is a distraction and should not be allowed on the road. Then he started threatening us. Travis called him out, was ready to beat the guy down right there. But the guy never even got out of the car. It was a tense moment for sure.

I'm a 40 year old Canadian and we learned about the Confederate Flag in one of my history courses that touched on American history when I was a kid.  I'm a mix of a black parent and a white parent, my dad who is black (from Belize in Central America) watched NASCAR when I was a kid, I enjoyed it and have been a fan all these years (stopped watching when Dodge left but started again with the return of the Intrepid, I also own an '01 Intrepid R/T).  My Favourite driver? Richard Petty, probably initially because of his Charger, met him and Kyle at a car show in the late '80s here in Toronto.  My first car, a 1972 Charger because that's the car that caught my eye going around the track.  I was also influenced by the gold coloured Charger Pete, Linc and Julie from the Mod Squad drove around in.  I am a fan of General Lee, I have the diecasts, the models, taped episodes of the show and all that stuff.  I choose to see the flag as what it is, a flag and not what it does or does not supposedly represent.  Then again I live in Canada (not free of racism) but more tolerant and quite different than most places in the States.

In his mind the guy probably had his own reasons for saying what he did, is it acceptable?  Definitely not.  I've had many encounters with my car, most are funny, "hey that's a white guy's car", "your the guy with the Charger right?", "hey man is that car yours?", "I never would have thought you own a car like that".  The list goes on.  My Charger is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina my first thought sitting in it, "maybe some racist redneck used to own this car".  Oh well it's mine now and I should not assume things.  At least you don't get death threats while driving any car, or waking down the street, or playing sports.

Glad it was an idle threat but some idiot, keep your car and Keep The Faith!  Now I'll sit back and read.

The people that are so offended and angered by what they percieve as racism, such as the black fellow in the original post, are the ones that create and perpetuate much of whole racism thing all together. Basically it is his problem, not yours. He is the racist in the situation.

I can understand that those who look at the rebel flag as just a flag and not anything else.  Afterall, we are in a new era correct?  None of us has participated in the civil war!  By God, that flag has nothing to do with slavery anymore.  We should be able to fly that flag and not worry about anyone desecrating it, threatening us, or getting angry.

That flag does not represent slavery, the oppression of white plantation owners on those of a different skin color, nor does it represent racism today.  Nevermind that the southern states have attempted to or abolished the flag from flying at their state capitol's, or the fact that the KKK still uses the flag as a representation of their hate, ignorance, and movement.

We all know that the flag does not represent those things anymore.  I bet, all those "colored" people, as some of you has so eloquently stated (white people are colored too right?), have no issues with the flag either.  Especially those who are from the south.  They see it as just a flag, just like that guy who threatened the developer of this thread.

Granted, he was not in the right by making death threats, but who are we to call him a "racist" in a white dominated society where "colored" people are still drug from behind trucks to the death for being "colored"?  Or when a black man is walking on the sidewalk and a guy in a car yells at him to "go home boy, before it gets dark and I can't see you to hit you!" (I witnessed that personally)

We are so easily to judge a man for his stupidity and ignorance in making death threats, that we fail to recognize our own stupidity and ignorance in regards to the indirect support of a racially based representation of a very non-glorious time in our history.

We can hide behind the concept that the flag is just a flag and be content with that.  Or, we can say, "man it was just a t.v. show," knowing darn well that t.v. makes everything legitimate.  (if it was on t.v., then it has to be fine)  I know, I do it too just to be civil with some people.

But, what if (and I say that hesitantly), that flag that the guy was cursing at was "Old Glory"?  That flag must represent our heroes and our country's people!  If he said that to "Old Glory" then by God he is anti-American.

My point is this, throughout time our society and culture has put forth a constant, evidentiary message to promote the unequal rights and segregation.  People have not changed in such a way to make that statement false, just look at this thread and some of what the members here have stated.

If Old Glory still meant then what it means today, so how can you say that the rebel flag means something different?

You take the USA flag to some parts of the world and the people there might kill you. Its sad but true. The fact that the KKK still uses the flag shows that some people still think it says "white power". Why it was use on the TV show IDK. The show would have still been the same without that flag. If I had a Gen/Lee car I would leave the flag off, why ask for trouble ?
Heck paint the USA flag instead, it look great for todays world-just don't drive it to Iran.

So are you saying that since the civil war is long over, the flag no longer means what it did?   

Could you imagine having this flag on the roof of a car? 

When you see it you immediately think of the Nazi's however that symbol has been around for 3000 years and has many different meanings in many different cultures.

Also, I guess the term "person of colour" could really confuse a lot people.
