I was told this but not sure if it's true...

Mr. Watt calculated that a good strong, dray horse, working at a gin for eight hours a day, averaged 22,000 foot pounds per minute. He increased this by 50%, and this has been the recognised unit of power measurement ever since.

"Horsepower" can get very confusing because there are 5 basic categories to measure hp. Mechanical, boiler, electric, metric and water. They are all close in value but are all different!
