All 3 books I've got on ZL1's say there were only 69 built too. The funny thing is that 2 books say there was only one Vette made & the other sez there were two...they both only have pics of the white one. I have always assumed that there was only one.

I remember that back in '69 They were running the ZL=1s in Vettes at Le mans and the things would set all these records in qualifiying and for the first few laps at speeds in excess of 200 MPH, These were GT class cars keeping up with the group 6 and 7 Prototypes but then the aluminum blocks would warp and the engines would explode.
If i remeber correctly, I  read about speeds of 220 mph and the shark fronts lifting and stuff on the old musslaine straight which was about 2 miles long,.. (now it's gotta kink in the middle) later, the "Batmobile Spirt of '76 vettes added all these air damms and stuff which cured alot of these lift problems but they sure were some awsome speeds with the 427 ZL-1 vettes.. ussually though they were the L=88s. My best friends dad had a 'green '68.. anyhow..
    Hummm,..   I wonder if they would'a used a HEMI?...

Chevrolet actually did offer the ZL-1 engine as Corvette RPO ZL1. The oft repeated but unverified production quantity is three. One fully documented car survives, a yellow hardtop, VIN 194379S729219, currently on display at Roger's Corvette Center, Maitland (near Orlando), Florida. A white hardtop also is in a private collection, sans factory documentation. Several other Corvette ZL-1 cars have appeared, but only the one is believed to be fully documented."

Did you read the little part in there warning possible cloners trying to pass their cars off as actual ZL-1 cars?

For those wishing to "create" a ZL-1 Camaro using one of the 69 VIN's, a word of caution. There is unpublished dealer paperwork for most of the cars that could be used to prove the car to be a non-original.

I was never a big Camaro fan, but the 60's models were okay. I'd give this one some thought if I were to ever get bored with rusty Mopars. It's hardly a possibility with me currently, but I love this concept of new, old cars. There was rumor they were considering the E-Body Barracuda as well, but we'll see. A 1971 Barracuda kit car? I'd use mine as a parts car in a second.

I thought I heard somewhere that GM put the kaibosh on that? Something to do with copyright laws...maybe I'm wrong?

Anyway regardless, I'd sure entertain thoughts of building one of those if I could afford it. Just imagine...a completely rust-free musclecar!

There were only 69 COPO ZL1 Camaros produced in 1969. Total aluminum 427. Made like the SS cudas and Darts to race on the track. The production quality of the blocks was well below par and they didn't hold up particularly well. Fred Gibb's Chevrolet got 50 of the total 69.  Guys like Grumpy Jenkins abandoned trying to get the ZL1 to hold together and ran the Cast iron block with the aluminum heads. They got them to go faster than the ZL1s. Block strength, rigidity, and porosity were are problem areas for them. But it was a production car and like the hemi Darts and cudas allowed them to legally race. A very expensive failure for Chev. But in Chev numbers 69 is ultra rare when a production run is in the hundreds of thousands.
The COPO ZLI, like the hemi Darts were the base 270 model, started off as a baseline lowest line 6 cylinder Camaro and was just given enough to get her going. No frills at all. 427/400TH/ 12 bolt.
The very first ZL1 was found 12 years ago or so and was restored back to as race prepped by Gibb's Chevrolet. Not as left the factory but in race trim. Lace paintjob and all. A very rare piece.
