My front disc brake kit came during the week and I tore into it this weekend.  I ordered it from Summit and it's a MBM kit that contains parts from later model Magnum/Cordobas.  Here's a picture of the kit.  I left out all bearings and bolts, etc. but they were included in the kit.  I have some questions about some of the parts, but I'll put those in individual posts.

I got the same kit last week. Mine does not include a proportioning valve?

The description on the Summit page http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2DBK1009&N=700+4294908110+4294908099+4294925081+4294922533+115&autoview=sku states:
QuoteConvert to disc brakes!

* Vacuum hose with fittings
* Bearings
* Seals
* Dust caps
* Spindle nuts and washers
* Installation hardware

I have not called Summit yet...please let me know if you got one.
Thanks!

Jack,

I didn't get a proportioning valve either.  Looks like we'll both be making a call to Summit.  My kit was also missing the instructions.  I went to MBM's website and was able to download a copy there, but it would have been nice if they had been included in the kit.  It seems like Summit still has some kinks to work out on this kit.

interesting!

is this a good alternative to those disc conversions kits that are usually mentioned? Something on W....

Is this cheaper way to go?

More conplete kit maybe even...

Would fit on charger 68 I guess?

I called Summit about my missing valve too.  It's on the way.

I was set to buy a kit from MP Brakes, but noticed that this one was a couple hundred dollars cheaper, plus MP wanted something like $120 for shipping!  Shipping from Summit was free.  The description of the kit says its for '62-'72 B-bodies so it'll work in the '68.

good daily driver kit

Why just DAILY DRIVER??

Years ago everyone was racing with 4 wheel drums. Some still do!!  Do you think because it doesn't have a FAT price tag or say WILDWOOD or whatever it is not good enough for the track???  That kit will kick the snot out of drum brakes!!

IT IS!!!!!!!

nice, this looks like a pretty good product for the price.   ive been looking at the scarebird set up but this looks to be a much better deal.

has anyone installed this on their ride yet?

I used a SSBC kit and can't imagine stopping with drums anymore.

for anyone thinking of getting this kit, try hotrodsusa.com. I got the same kit for $579 to my door, and it included the proportioning valve. look under "garage sale" on their site. They just drop shipped it from MB brakes. I have no affiliation with them, but maybe help someone save a $.

So the debate is over as far as improper spindle hight of the late 70's B body disc's being used on 62-72 B body's?

GOOD!
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

Brent69

Sorry Silver RT, I was away from the computer for a few days.  The rotors are 11".

$579 is a good price.  The ones from Summit were $699.

Per http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/archive/disc-main.html, these spindles are the exact size specified.

The rotors are the 10.87" discussed in the above mentioned article.  Although these rotors and calipers are supposed to fit 14" wheels, my Rallye Wheels rub the calipers.

The only thing I see differant is that the calipers mount toward the rear, not the front.  I called MBM to confirm this, and it is also clearly illustrated in the manual http://www.piratejack.net/instructions/mopar-dbk-instructions.pdf

I am still sorting out proportioning valve / metering block / residual valve options.  My research tells me that this conversion will work as a bolt-in, but to do it right means a bit more reconfiguring the hydraulics.

I intend to post in-depth about my experience (with pictures) when I finish the brakes.

So massage the caliper a little. No biggie....

Calipers on the front will probably hit the sway bar. At least they will with the A body disc brake conversion. My 68 Charger stops as good as my sons 76 Scamp, They basically have the same brake set up except the callipers are mounted to the rear on the Charger, and to the front  on the Scamp..

I think the A-body conversion does position the caliper down a little lower, the B-body forward mount works great...at least it does on my '70. :icon_smile_big:
This is from a '72 Satellite I swapped years ago...

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Hey CF, I am pretty sure that both of your cars have the same spindles on them..

<<<<see my post above about 14" wheels fitment>>>>

Good news for the hobby: 14" Rallye wheels work just fine with this brake conversion. :icon_smile_big:

Bad news for ms personally: The reason my wheels rub is that both front wheel have terrible run-out.  The left is warped so bad it drags on the caliper. :flame: :flame:  The right does not rub, but has at least 1/2" runout at the rim :flame: .

So, since I have to buy 2 rims, I am going to go ahead and get a set of 15" Magnum 500s.  Looks like I'll spend the evening looking at recommended backspacing for the rears.

terrible one

So which kit is the one that is supposed to work with 14" wheels? The one from Summit that is linked in the first post?

Steve P.

You should read the article. Many of the early disc brake systems from other mopars will work with 14" wheels..  Easy to find is Volare/Aspen and Fifth Ave. and Duster and Satellite and Diplomat,,,,,,,,,

terrible one

I undertand the article, but I just want to know what kit to get and where to get it from.

aswert1223

The Summit kit is what I got for $699.00: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2DBK1009&N=700+4294908110+4294908099+4294925081+4294922533+115&autoview=sku

http://www.hotrodsusa.com/ had it for $529.00 last week, but they raised the price to $699.00  :icon_smile_sad:

http://www.piratejack.net./disc-brake-kit/disc-brake-mopar.html has them for $649.00

These are (apparently) all reselling the kit from http://www.mbmbrakeboosters.com/disc_brake_kits.html.  MBM does not sell to the public, but I think  http://www.piratejack.net./ is their retail outlet.

All the vendors above call these 11" kits, but they are really the 10.87" rotors mentioned in the article http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/archive/disc-main.html as fitting 14" wheels.  As I posted above, I can confirm this to be true.

I found all the likely sources for used parts at my local scrap yard, but I figured it would cost $400 - $500 to do the job using the junk yard parts.  The cost difference to the new kit was worth it to me.
