I really want to build this car! And I actually know where there is a Charger with the roof cut off already.
What I'm debating is whether I should build it as the "Topless Charger", or the "Supercharger" it later became....
Thoughts?

I've riden in the org. supercharger. It's since been retored last time I saw it was back in 1991 at a Bell, Wa. car show in it's org. cond. back then. It went to Penn. State for restoration and thats the last I heard of it. I believe a man named Dave redone the car. The car you show in a photo is something else for sure with the roof cut off of it.
Mark
It was the summer of 1991, not 1992. My mistake. I believe it was a not the owner of the car that gave the 5 or so minute ride also, but hey, I wasn't gonna turn it down! I do have photos somewhere also. I'll post what I have soon as I find them.

All because the supercharger still exists, I would have to do the topless charger version.

dodgecharger-fan

That's a tough question...

I like the overall look of the SuperCharger, but there were some things done to it to make it roadworthy that kinda messed up the look.

The biggest of those things is the side mirrors that were added - see the picture with the guy behind the wheel.

Looking at the same thing on the Topless, the side mirrors are way up front on the fenders - odd but unique in a good way, IMO.

I say go SuperCharger if you're going show car - not on the road.

Go Topless Charger if you want to drive it.

chargerrt

the Supercharger looks like it's about 40 feet long!!!

1st off where the hell did all those pics of topless 68 come from???

and 2ndly i vote for the 68 version, looks way cooler-MATT

As anybody who has rebuilt any unibody Mopar product would know, a convertible version has a few "add-ons" from the factory to reduce torsional action between the front and rear frame sections.
The Charger R/T I am currently rebuilding is benefitting from the factory style torque boxes in addition to subframe connectors that don't just bolt in, but are integral to the chassis itself.
On a topless version of same, to supplant the stiffening attributes formally attributed to the roof, a series of braces would be incorporated throughout the body, similar to - but not exactly the same as a rollcage.
Additional latches would be added to the doors connecting to the braces running inside the quarter panels.
A loop would run under the cowl, then forward along the shear panels to the frame rails adjacent to the radiator support.
The effect would be triangulation of the chassis, not only on the longitudinal axis, but transverse as well.

Lord Warlock

I never really understood why they didn't do a convertible charger, there were plenty of other b-body cars that were roofless.  I remember drooling over the supercharger in the old car and driver rags (dad used to have all the mid 60s to early 70s magazines) Reinforcing the frame shouldn't be that hard for a charger, as long as you were careful not to have a ultra high performance motor with tons of torque (would probably twist the frame).  If it were me, I'd make a supercharger but make the windscreen a little higher than the original, sucking bugs would bite otherwise.
69 RT/SE Y3 cream yellow w/tan vinyl top and black r/t stripe. non matching 440/375, 3:23, Column shift auto w/buddy seat, tan interior, am/fm w/fr to back fade, Now wears 17" magnum 500 rims and Nitto tires. Fresh repaint, new interior, new wheels and tires.

Ghoste

I'd go with the Topless version.  Again because the Super Charger is still around (where did it go after Steven Juliano had it?).
There were no convertible Super Bee's either.  I've always wondered about both of those cars.

Charger-Bodie

im sure some of you know a bout the car, but one of the original designers of the 68 charger wanted there to be a convert, so chrysler gave him a car to experiment with, they would have produced it but they wanted it to have the charger roof line when up ,and as you can imagine it would be pretty hard to get that long area of cloth in the sail panels to work good both ways . well dispite all that he did  finnally get a top that looked right and functioned in his free time but it was close to the end of the 70 model year and the new 71 was about to be released so it was all for nothing .but, it does still live on ,some where ive seen pics and it was on ebay once about 6 years ago the car was green and the top was black ,the project was not finished the trim around the well was undone ect but it was cool

heres the emails from mr.juliano i got from him sometime last year-MATT(top parts are the questions i asked and the below is what steve answered)

1#what are those small objects in the door scoops?
2#it states the car was white with blue trim, so is the tail stripe blue?
3#are the steering wheel and console 1967 model items?
4#what are those mirrors off of?
5# what type of gas caps are those?, and are they connected to the actual
gas tank or just 4 show?

MATT...I HATE THINKING OF THIS CAR AS WELL AS THE DAROO1 AND SWINGER CONCEPT. IN A MOMENT OF STUPIDITY I SOLD ALL 3 OF THEM. I ALSO REGRET SELLING 3 427 COBRAS AND MY REAL GT40. SO NOW THAT YOU RUINED MY NIGHT (JUST KIDDING) I WILL TRY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS BASED ON MY SUPPRESSED MEMORY.

1. COUNTRY STICKERS
2. I THINK IT WAS RED. PRETTY SURE IT WAS
3 STEERING WHEEL WAS MESH. WHEN I OWNED IT THE CONSOLE WAS PART 68 AND PART 69.
4 I USED TO KNOW THE ANSWER. VERY SIMILAR TO HURST SCRAMBLER.
5 THE CAPS WERE AN AFTERMARKET BRAND. ONE SIDE REAL ONE SIDE JUST BOLTED TO 1/4. FUNNY STORY, I FOUND AN AD FOR THEM IN A 70 DATED MAGAZINE AND CALLED THE NUMBER IN 1999. A WOMAN ANSWERED AND SOLD ME 2 NEW ONES FOR 20BUCKS.

NOW IM OFF TO THE MOVIES AND I WILL BE THINKING OF THESE OLD FRIENDS OF MINE. I CRIED REAL TEARS WHEN THEY LEFT. SINCERELY, STEVEN

Great information!
The mirrors on the Topless Charger are the exact same as the ones I'm using on my Deora replica. They are a generic mirror that was used on many English sportscars in the 1960's, and are avaliable on eBay. I wonder what happened to the two original gas caps, since Steven replaced them with two new ones?
