how much you pay taxes for goverment, when you order parts from US.I asking this, cause my frend lives in Canada, and he gonna move back to Finland. He told me at he can bring parts for me if I need anything, and I need Keisker 5 speed transmission for my 1969 Charger

It depends.

Sometimes nothing at all. I've had parts come through via US Postal Service and Canada Post with nothing owing - no duties, no taxes.

Sometimes, about 14% taxes - depending on which province it's going to. There's a 6% federal sales and service tax (it used to be 7) and Ontario has an 8% provincial sales tax.

When someone has to do the customs paperwork, they want to get paid for it. This is where you can get really screwed.
UPS charges around $25 in brokerage fees - basically to do the paperwork.
USPS charge $5 for the same service.
Bring it over yourself and it's free - as in no fee to do the paperwork. You may still need to pay taxes.

On trips that I've made into the U.S., I've only ever been called in once to pay taxes. Most other times, I'm under the personal exmeption limit anyway. I always declare my purchases and I always have the receipts handy. If I have booze, I keep it to one bottle per adult - that's what's allowed. No one smokes so I have no tobacco. Bring either of those two things in with you - over the personal limit, and you're sure to get sent into the office to pay taxes on everything you've got.

If you are a visitor to Canada, there's a form to fill out to get your federal sales tax back. Ask at the border or airport. Have all your receipts. You can only claim what you can prove you've paid out.

UPS brokerage for $25 ???
it averages $80-90 here , I ordered 1 part that cost $50 it had $70 in brokerage fees , I told UPS to keep it

50 to 75 has been more typical of my experience around here.  They must be free to charge whatever they think they can get away with.

Here is where you can find some information on UPS Brokerage Fees.

http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs_clearance.html

I try to avoid UPS and request USPS whenever possible.

If there is something I need from the United States that must be shipped UPS, I try to find a Canadian retailer for that item.  I have found that some of these folks are using an exchange rate that is 5 years old (1.57) and add the brokerage fees and shipping costs to the price.  After doing some calculations I find it more economical to us the US vendor and factor in the UPS freight & brokerage fees.

I guess it just depends on how bad you need the part and how much effort you are willing to put forth to get it for the best possible price.

I have some customer scattered around the US so when I plan to visit them, I put my shopping list together and find the local retailers.

If you send via UPS, if it arrives, which is very doubtful, wayyy too much.

Use USPS and the main crux for custom and excise determination  is the declared value. Some guys in the US think by assigning a large value onto the item, it may get treated better. Well the bottom line is that the customs and excise is derived from the declared value. The standard fee is about 22% of the declared value. Added onto that are other fees, and duties which can bring it up to 30%.

Now UPS has all that plus they arbitrarily add their own special fees. I've had $80 worth the decals wind up an additional $70 for fees from UPS. How about a used set of 1968 Dart door panels for $50 USD come with a $135 UPS total fee package.

Bottom line - never, never, never, never, never, never, never UPS - never!!!! USPS are the best. And for all you border smart guys, be very careful declaring "gifts". This has been abused for many years and now packages are randomly inspected and people are getting nailed - and hard.

That said, I have gotten a lot of stuff sent across the border and have had not too many problems at all (well except for the above UPS nightmares). Don't stretch your "gift" lies too far and you will do okay.

And if a US seller will only use UPS - walk away - no run. Even free is not enough incentive for using UPS across the 49th parallel. A free hemi would wing up triple its worth using UPS.

Truer words have never been spoken.
Once between Year One and UPS I got royally $crewed over for a throttle cable linkage. Nothing like the shipping and handling plus brokerage fees costing me 2x as much as the part itself :icon_smile_angry: :icon_smile_angry: :icon_smile_angry:

Yeah, like we don't already have enough problems arguing with Chevy owners, dealing with snow and rust, higher fuel costs, and squabbling with each other over which year of Charger is best.

I agree with all of the above
If UPS goes Bankrupt I won`t even notice , never use them , never will
USPS is good , FED Ex is good too
I ask to have parts shipped any other way but UPS , if the shipper sends it UPS anyway the shipment is refused & the shipper pays shipping 3 times [ups to me, ups back , & another way to ship it ]
if everyone quit using them they would go away !!!

It depends where he lives in Canada.  All provinces except Alberta have Provincial Sales Tax.  You have to pay GST at 6% and PST of whatever % the province he lives in charges.  Here in Ontario, PST is 8%

Keisler ships to Canada using FedEx...
I believe the brokerage charge was around $100 plus the taxes.
