picked up an 84 camaro,305 v 8,auto,a/c with limited slip rear-body is soild but surface rust, runs and drives for 500 bucks! my wife has been after me to get a hot rod for her,and i figure this was a cheap way to get out of it,at least for now. hopefully i can put it together cheap, and turn it for a profit-so she can get a mopar! sorry no pics,my camera is still packed up from the move

GM calls it "posi-traction" - wouldn't want you to look like you don't know what you're talkin' 'bout when you start hangin' out at Chevy cruise night!   :D

I had one of those cars waaay back when also.  Good car!

BTW - did you test fit the baby seat before you bought it?

There is an huge amount of info on those cars and I would check and see what everyone does to them, so you don't waste money on unneeded modifications. I also would not swap out the rearend as that could get expensive and might keep the 305 to keep the costs down.

Its a 350 sbc time and a 3 speed trans those cars aren't too heavy but not too strong either. There is so many aftermarket parts for them it should not be a problem. Get some frame re frocements if you drop a 350 or a 383 in it-yeah the rear end won't take it either. Good luck.

As for keeping the 305-thats a weak motor and 350 Chevy's are cheap so thats what I would do.

Bandit72

get a 327...sorry but i'm racist against 350's...
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

andy74

before i saw the light and got mopar,i built a few of these cars, usually the 350,turbo 400 route, and broken rear ends are part of the game!!my last one was a 74,383 stroker with a turbo 400,built 12 inch rear with 4.88s,and she was a screamer-dont think the wife needs anything that serious,so im thinking 350,decent heads and cam, beef up the 700r4,and a 3.73 gear-currently has 3.42s,which may stay-quick paint and replace the shit flat hood with a fiberglass cowl hood, and revamp the interior with decent seats, carpet and new headliner-then she will leave me alone when im spending cash on the charger! :icon_smile_big:

Well I think cause the 327 has a shorter stoke so it can rev higher. They could spin to 7000 rpms everyday and not break. But its more money and now hard to find a good one.

Cool ride for a Chevy bro! Have fun with it. :icon_smile_big:

Dude , you want to put a Built 350, Built Tranny, Gears, Paint, replace 1/2 the interior, hood, etc on a plainjane 1984 automaitic 305 car and expect a profit ? :rotz:

I don't mean to be harsh, and applaud your hotrodding ways, BUT have you looked thru the AutoTrader lately ?
Mid 80's Camaro's - the ones that sell, not sit in the paper for a year, with mildly built motors sell for $3000 range.  At least anywhere I have visited lately. You want more $$ it will have to be an exceptional drivetrain, or excellent body/interior, or both.
By the time you put the upgrade money into it, then add your time..... I don't see how you make money

Should have bought an old Valiant / Duster / another 3rd Gen / whatever future Mopar she does want - and put those $$$$ towards it instead. :pity:

This isn't a post dogging you, just the idea.  The years you "lose" fixing up the Camaro are just years "lost" in getting a nice Mopar.

Why would any true muscle car fan feel any ill will towards you?  F-bodies kick ass and haul it too.  Congratulations on your purchase, I just hope you don't get buried by all of the work involved...

andy74

the good part of this car is that the body is solid, and runs and drives,so it is easier to at least move it around, unlike what i would usually bring home!

as for fixing it,a complete interior, paint etc isnt exactly what i was looking to do,just junkyard plastic, and a new headliner,a bunch of sanding to get her somewhat straight, and a quick type paint job, that i will probably attempt at home, because i dont care about the car enough to be upset if i fuck it up.small block chevys are 75 bucks complete at the local pick and pull, and ill swap in a cheap paw cam, headers and i can build my own tranny.so,all in all i set a budget of 3000,and my time-so even if i break even when we sell it,the wife will finally get a taste of what its like to work on a project, and she will get off my back when i spend more dough on the charger!!

and i would have loved to find a valiant/dart duster for her,but the price of that stuff around here in the same shape is way off base,a roller with frame rot was sold for 3800 bucks! plus if she doesnt like the camaro,im sure it will sell and ill put that money back into the charger too

People who don't liven in the rust belt don't know how much a clean old car can sell for. $500 gets you nothing in decent shape that's over 30 years old. That car was a good buy.

PUT A 440 IN IT!!!!

I was at Mopars in the park in MN a few years ago and it was raining. I saw a 1st Gen camaro there and was like "WTF" anyways after the rain stopped I walked by it again and the hood was up. It had a 440 in it. ;D I said to my buddy, "why?" he said "they fixed it!"  ;D

Here are the pics I have. Forgot to take an overal shot, but picture a really Clean green Camaro.

1st gens can fit BBC's easy - that 440 wouldn't be very hard in that car.  Lots of aftermarket support - most anything is possible.

3rd gens are very different and have mcstrut front suspension.    They look like they have a lot of room but things are tight just with AC installed.   Not much better without.

i have a line on a 400 small block out of a late 70s blazer, and i can get it cheap(250)figure i can scrap the truck for 75-100,and it runs really well, frame is broken so it wont pass new york state inspection-so the plan is coming together, slowly but surely!! for the record a 440 in that car would freaking rock
