So I went to my local body shop to ask about getting them to replace my vynal top.  The guy says sure, for about $300.  But then he starts telling me of another option.  He claims that he has a special paint that he can put on that will look just like vynal, but without all the drawbacks. Of course, I'm sckeptical and he didn't have any examples he could show me.

Have any of you ever heard of this treatment or tried it?  I'm not talking about painting the roof black, this guy claims that this stuff has the actual look, grain and feel of real vynal (without seams).

  Whats the scoop :icon_smile_question: :icon_smile_question: :icon_smile_question:

hes probably going to spray it with that rock guard coating that they put on rockers to give it texture then squirt it black

I've seen simulated vinyl tops painted on other cars and the gravel guard analogy is about the best way to describe it.  It's okay for some but I don't like the look personally.

Sounds pretty strange to me.  I think I'll stick to the real thing.

I think some dealers did this also back in the 60's, as a dealer add-on, i have seen some pics and read stories of cars with this on, the dealer sprayed on a textured paint, added  some fake seams, and installed vinyl top mouldings. I think they looked close, but you could still tell the difference, though.  I would just put a real one on, thats what i plan on.
