"Oversize" Six Pack Scoop

First of all, Hi! Newbie to your site, but not to the love of Chargers.

I met a fellow enthusiast a couple of weeks ago "SeattleChargerDog" that told me about Chargers.com. Great site! A lot of Knowledgable Folks here. And some sweet rides..all of them..a Charger in any condition, is still ....... a Charger

I've recently started restoring my 69 strip car, (sort of street legal) The new engine wouldn't fit under the old scoop so I cut a hole in it ,thinking that it would be easy to find another...oops! not the case. The tallest I've found is 4.5". that won't work. I'll need at least 5.5" I'm prepared to pay for a custom made one, if that's what it'll take, but would rather spend the coin elswhere..on the car of course!  any suggestions as to who makes or might fab a taller one?

Here are a few pics of where I'm at in the restoration

Thanks!  Aaron.

Lord Warlock

just a question, why would you want to use a six pack hood scoop while at the same time using a hilborn injector type scoop on the carbs?  If you want to keep the existing chrome scoop, just cut the hole in the hood to allow it to poke thru, it still looks good, better than a six pack with a scoop sticking thru it would.  Or use just the six pack, and an aluminum plate/foam to seal it to the hood scoop.
69 RT/SE Y3 cream yellow w/tan vinyl top and black r/t stripe. non matching 440/375, 3:23, Column shift auto w/buddy seat, tan interior, am/fm w/fr to back fade, Now wears 17" magnum 500 rims and Nitto tires. Fresh repaint, new interior, new wheels and tires.

Lord Warlock,

Hi Thanks for the reply. I'm a little confused about your question/statement. To answer your question about why I would want do a hilborn/sixpack combo, is that I prefer a cleaner look, no engine parts poking through the hood, hence the six pack to cover it all up. and there are also safety issues to consider with running with an open hole in your hood, mostly having to do with vision. fire oil and water coming out a hole in the hood at 120+ mph would make it a little tough to see when to turn at the end of the track.. that rules out the open hood idea for me.

I chose the hilborn scoop because it's one of the few air cleaners out there that allow you to remove the filter element and run with just a particle screen. depending on air density, filter elements can restrict air flow too much. I've seen a lot of guys running without air cleaners at all, too risky for me!

And as for your statement " it still looks good, better than a six pack with a scoop sticking through it would" I agree, but that's exactly what I have(see pic one) and am trying to get away from. So my plan is to get a six pack scoop  tall enough to completely conseal the hilborn lunchbox.

"Or use just the six pack, and an aluminum plate/foam to seal it to the hood scoop".Thanks but thought of that.  way to many fab issues to make that work on a glass clip.

Hope that answers your question. Thanks again for the reply and suggestions, but going to stick to plan A.

Aaron

terrible one

MorePwr,

I wish I could help you with your question, but I just wanted to tell you that is one sick Charger you've got there! That's awesome man!

Lord Warlock

I wasn't trying to criticize, the hillborne style scoop looks good poking thru the flat hood of a charger, I also like the looks of the six pack scoop on them as well and have considered putting a fiberglass hood on mine with the integrated six pack style scoop.   Your charger looks pretty radical with the flip front end.  Its just that the hilborn adds too much extra height on top of the hi rise intake.  They used to make two different sizes of six pack scoops, one stock height and another that was taller for racing.  But I haven't kept up with the sites over the years.  AAA fiberglass used to carry them, i'm not sure if they are still around though.

By using an open element type breather (weiand used to make them) that were low profile and when combined with the aluminum plate/foam surround would seal the hole in the hood, and still fit under the six pack scoops.  I'll look around and see if I can find a source or two on the net for the taller scoop.  How much clearance do you need to clear the hilborn scoop?  Tallest six pack I believe was only about 5 inches or so.

Bodywork?
It looks pretty good from 20' but get up close and you see lots of weathering. Rust starting to lift the paint, nothing to bad accept for the lower rear quarters, they may need to be replaced. rear valiance is all bent up, bumpers, hood scoop are getting replaced and the top is OE, dried up and splitting. I painted it back in 92 and unfortunately had to park it outside for a couple years. the rain, snow and sun took their toll real quick.

Ghoste

Okay.  It definitely doesn't show up in the photos.  The car looks great from where I'm standing.  :icon_smile_big:

Exactly why one should be cautious with mail order brides. ha!

Lord Warlock

Not sure if its the right one, but located this on ebay and it says its 5 1/2 inches high which would make it the taller of the two sizes.

This one is 5 inches tall, looks decent, also on ebay

In case you hate ebay, here is another source located, they sell both sizes.

Thanks a bunch!
I don't hate ebay,I've had good luck on there, for the most part, but the 5.5"er at vfn is exactly what I've been looking for, great deal! I'll be giving that one a try.

THE CHARGER PUNK

1stly , where did you get a tilt front-end for a 69 charger???

and 2ndly, why not go with a bigger scoop such as a 68 s/s hemi scoop???(as seen below)

deputycrawford

I would like to know your engine and driveline specs. Also the 1/4 mile times and trap speeds. I also like the tilt front end. my 69 is numbers matching car but the next one might get a tilt.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

The car already had the nose on it when I bought it, but I did recently come across a company making them. I'll see if I cant find the Address, and post it.

I looked hard at the Hemi scoop, they look great! on an Dart ( damn nice one by the way) but as far as I know, they were never available on a Charger.

you do know, that there was never any hood scoop available on any year of the 2nd generation charger???-MATT

Lord Warlock

I was thinking that but didn't want to say it.  Only the superbee had the six pack scoop on it.  The 70 charger had a six pack available, but no scoop.  Speaking of which, is the framing any different on a 70 to allow a six pack intake/carbs/air breather to clear as compared to the 69?

No didn't know that. Do know the difference between an A body and a B body though.
