This guy apparently does not value his free time. I can't imagine working until I'm 60 and this poor fool has gone for a century. Yea, yea, it's commendable and all that stuff but it sure ain't going to be me if I can help it.

I once had visions of retiring at 55. My youngest won't even be done with college until I'm 60.

Thats nuts, I work with an old timer whos a conductor. The guy is 73 and a millionaire to boot. He refuses to go. I figured he would have learned a lesson from his brother who died at 81. He was still working and was the number 1 conductor on the amtrack roster nationwide. I wont be sticking around a day past 60.

I may not work tell I'm a 100 but the way medical insurance is running I might be working tell I'm at least 65 maybe longer.  My parents pay close to $800 a month to cover both of them and that includes supplmental insurance...........

Some people have no life outside of work. Bloody shame but true. I work with three of them. One guy has 40 years in (we get full pension at 35 years of service) and he is going to go on emiritus status when he retires and continue to come to work.
While I still enjoy my job very much, I'll never go past 35 years.

I agree with ck1.  I recently turned 60 and never thought I would continue to work after that for very long.  The main thing that keeps my wife and me working is the cost of medical insurance, and it is not going to get better, it is going to get worse.  No real choice but to continue on until Medicare kicks in.  Retiring at or before 60 was a nice thought while it lasted and reality hit us in the face!

If I'm not mistaken, Britain has some sort of health insurance either provided by the government or maybe the EU. Only people travelling outside of the member countries needs private health insurance. The article says he works so that he's not bored and I can see his point. Of course, I have hobbies to keep me from being bored.

Exactly. It's that free time thing I talked about above. Maybe his wife nags him too much. But he must like her a little bit since they had 17 kids. Not having a phone will add years to your life too.

I've heard from many workers here at work that are eligible to retire, however they don't because they have this common fear that once they retire, they will simply perish away. Allot of them gave me the impression that having the sense of "being needed" is what keeps them going. When you are home and retired the "being needed" thing is gone. I can tell you that between the hobbies I have, I could keep myself being needed, hopefully my finances will be able to keep up with the hobbies!

That odd feeling of being needed never was a concern for me I guess. I feel like there's a huge void in the Goof Off Dept. that needs to be filled and I'm just the guy to do it. If you can't stay busy and useful at home you've got mental problems because I normally have to go to work to get some rest. Ever take a vacation and are so busy and tired by the end of it you need to go to work to be bored and relaxed again? I'd rather be bored and relaxed at home working on my car and other hobbies.

The people that baffle me are the ones who think the company is going to go belly-up if they leave because they're such smart and valuable know-it-alls that the rest of us will just wonder around like zombies bumping into each other without them.

i worked with a guy like that. he would never take a day off, worked through his brakes, he couldn't stop moving. he was in great shape for being 78 yrs old. the company forced him to retire. then he died 2 months later. I've always believed that if they let him keep working he'd still be alive. Rene
