I noticed a slight bend in one of the lugs.  Probably a bend, I guess it could be pressed in crooked.  Do you think this is a problem?  I'm probably going to just let it go.

Why not change it ? I would put the nut back on a few threads and find a socket that fit over the head of the stud and take a big c-clamp and press it out. Your local auto store should have a new one for a few dollars. Just make sure it is in all the way -head flush.

TylerCharger69

you already have it off...change it!!!

Chryco Psycho

could have been over torqued & stretched to bend it making it weak already , why not change it ?

Why put the nut back on it? Its already bent and no good.  No reason to run a risk of mushrooming the nut in the process......

Go get a new one at a parts store.   You MIGHT be able to pound the old one out but most likely you will have to add some heat to it and then pound it out. Shouldnt be a big deal. You got the hard part over with by taking the tire off and pulled  the part off the car.

I would put the nut back on so the clamp does not slip while pressing it out. Sure you can pound it out but I would rather press it out if poss.

TylerCharger69

Pounding it out invites the risk of bending or breaking the spindle.....needs to be pressed  with a clamp or something of that nature

Air chisel with a point bit. It'll drive it out without hurting a thing...

Yes...that'll work too....but not a good hammer swing though

Am I the only one who has no air compressor now of days  ???

Steve P.

:yesnod:  I think so...  Wrenching without air is nuts. For me anyway!! I have a bad back and if I didn't have air power to make my life easier, I would be on the couch 24/7...  You just can't beat the investment..  :yesnod:

Old lady says it makes to much noise and takes too much room. Oh well the 2006 buick stays outside while mine stays in the garage so thats cool with me.

Steve P.

You don't need a monster to run a home shop unless you are planning on doing some major body work..  My first compressor was bought for $150.00 used and rebuilt. Cast iron, 2 piston, single stage. I used it for many years until I bought a 80 gal. two stage upright. A guy came to my house to look at a car I had for sale. He didn't buy the car, BUT,,, he offered me $150.00 for my old compressor.  I was happy to plug it in and show him how well it worked. Then I was real happy to take his money.........

I use air for everything. I couldn't live without it...

I am sure you are right , it save me so much time and energy. Maybe I look at them again, think some brand new ones are small and not too loud. She might bitch a little but whats new ?? Maybe if I spend less time in the garage it make up for it. Unless I go nuts and decide what the heck might as well pop the heads off one weekend and rotate the tires the next. Ha HA.

Steve P.

You can allways put some insul-board around it. Just make sure it gets plenty of air to keep down the heat..

Thats true  but not every one has a press   and its not like you are going to hit it with a 16lb sledge.   Some pent. oil and then maybe some heat and it should come out with a few taps. If you were worried about the spindle breaking you could always put something under it to help take some of the shock. You would want something under it anyways when pressing.

It looks to me that the hub is off the spindle now. Maybe drill a hole a bit bigger than the shoulder of the stud in the end of a chunk of 4x4 and use it as an anvil to keep the hub flange from getting bent..
