1973 440 oil pan?

Hey guys,

Due to upcoming events Id like to get the 440 into my 73 Charger (original 318 car), I have the mounts (from Schumacher) and I have a BB oil pan thats been sitting around for a few years. The engine right now has a front sump pan, Im pretty sure that wont work, however will the other pan? (Its not a center sump, its a bit forward of center)... Heres the pan:

OEM casting number on pan is 971 and it looks just like that one you posted

Yeah it looks just like the 971, do you have a picture of a 440 with a 971 installed in a 73? (just for reference). Thanks Nacho.

bottom view ? no... I think is hard to find a pic like that... but would be the same than my 400 with the 971 pan... is exactly the same view with just gap difference with exhausts. 440 are wider. I don't have a pic, but can take it in a few days

Alright thanks Nacho, Im just curious as to how the sump sits with the K-frame (the gaps, etc...) because I did some basic measurements and for some reason it feels odd.

I tried searching eariler but couldnt find any... Im just curious as to how the pan sits, the front of the sump is supposed to sit right behind the k-frame correct? by my measurements it looks real close...

OH YES sits very close... maybe 1/2 inch or so. I never measured, but is a fact sits VERY close.

yeah in my 73 with a 383 with the schmacher mounts and the 971 pan, you've got MAYBE a 1/2 inch of clearance......i went through the same thing, it looks like it will never fit, but it does........if i get a chance i'll take a picture for you.

Yeah it looks real close, hopefully this pan is based on a 971 and will work. Good to know its supposed to be like that, thanks

I just did the 318 to big block swap and tried to use the centre sump pan that came with the engine and it didn't fit even though the measurement were pretty close to what the schumacher instructions said. I found a 971 pan and it it fit with no problems. When I measured the aftermarket pans they were to deep to fit in the K frame.
