so why is the 68-70 charger so popular besides the general lee. i like the 68-70 charger , but the best looking charger iv ever seen was a 71 R/T that was gunmetal gray.

To me, the coolest looking car on the planet is the '69 Charger second to none. The GL may have planted the seed as a child, but I appreciate them in all colors and configurations. The other two years are so similar, that I appreciate them along with the '69. But that is just my view.

i dont like eney charger thats been to modified. like being lowered and blowers. it most generally doesn't look good

I have no Idea............ :ahum:

Almost everyone remembers seeing their first sighting of a second generation Charger. Charger is most closely associated with Mopar high performance, with road runner possibly second. This is for the vast majority - not diehard gearheads. Plus the second generation Charger has a shape unlike any others. The first generation and third generations carry shapes and silhouttes that other manufacturers also have used. Also look at the advertising and marketing for the Charger as opposed to all the other hi-po mopars. There is more Charger literature per year than all the other models combined. So it gets the greatest exposure both in print and on the tube.
Fast forward and what icon from the past brings back feel good memories and war stories concerning Mopar? Sure the true gear heads may point to a hemi cuda or stripper hemi road runner, but they were never in the public's eye like the Charger.

You know, I think that the 2nd generations are more popular only because of the "Dukes". If the tv show used a '66 or '67, or a '71 to '74, I really believe that those body styles would be more popular.

Where's your laughing smiley face DCGuy? Wait, you weren't serious, were you?  :o

The Dukes have nothing to do with 68-70 Hemi Chargers selling for 200K. Nor does Don Johnson have anything to do with the 'Cuda frenzy. The Dukes may have done something, but not much as far as value. As a matter of fact, most owners that don't have a GL, can't stand them and wish they would just go away (no offense Bo and Luke). Also, serious collectors never reference the Dukies when looking for an investment...the car sells itself is my point.

There's no doubt the 68-70 Charger was the ultimate Mopar. Don't blame me, blame Chrysler. I didn't build the masterpiece, I just bought it.  :yesnod:

ps- I like the '71 very much. It's 3rd on my list behind the '68...'70 first of course.  :icon_smile_wink:

In numerous articles over the years discussing muscle cars in general, the 1969 Dodge Charger is often refered to as "the best looking muscle car ever to come out of Detroit".

As mentioned, I think the Dukes of Hazzard plays / played a role in its popularity but not necessarily its value.

I've seen it written on this site by others and I would agree that watching the TV show as a 10 year old boy peaked my interest and spawned a love for the car that has lasted the better part of my life.  I recall asking my Father what kind of car that was.  It was love at first site.  Sure I have fallen in love with numerous other cars but I always loved the '69 Charger.

Do I want a General Lee clone - not on your life.  Do I care that others have them and enjoy them - no.  I do get kinda sick of those dixe horns though!

I also like the '71 Charger R/T, the '70 GTX and the '69 Torino and the '70 Boss 429.  One day I'll have one of each.

So do some of us clone owners. I limit hitting that thing at car shows. But I have seen people who hit it every time asked.

Hey NHCharger, you need to paint that gold one white.  Would complete the set   :icon_smile_wink:

2nd gen chargers are unique..nothing else even comes close to resembling one. they look like there going 100 mph standing still. I have a pair of 70's myself..but i like the 8's and 9's just as much. 2nd gens are rolling works of art..you can get lost in the body lines..and anyone who owns a second gen is a fanatic about it. My favorite view is from the cockpit..when I'm driving my car..looking at the top of the drivers fender and hood..ohhh and the hood turn signals..awesome!

2. Why does everyone want to be rich?
3. Why does pretty much every guy want to date Heidi Klum?
4. Why does pretty much every woman want to date Brad Pitt?
5. Why would anyone want to lay in a hammock with an ice cold beer on a sunny day?
6. Why does everyone want to be successful?
7. Why does everyone want to be thin, fit and energetic?
8. Why does everyone want cheap gas?
9. Why does everyone want a government they can trust?
10. Why does redneck ask such dumb questions?

That is exactly true. When the Dukes first came out, NOBODY cared or even knew what a Charger was, let alone a 69. They were worth nothing at that time. NOTHING (I was there). If the show didn't matter, then why did guys start buying and hoarding Chargers the first few years of the show? I've been in Advertising...if you don't think advertising works, get your head examined. Bullitt...the 'hero' had the Mustang, that show was NOT known for the Charger(that 'black' car). The Monkees and GTO. James Bond...Aston Martin. Torino lovers are grateful for Starsky and Hutch. And on and on and on. North America is a materialistic society, fed by the media and advertising. That's just the way it is.

Now, the 2nd Gens are also, simply well designed, and cool cars. Period. I've had them and love them. My personal favourite Charger is a 72 Rallye, with the 71 RT and the 69 tied for second. The second gens are simply the definition of a Muscle Car.

At the same time, it's a moot point too. 3rd gens drive nicer, have roomier interiors, brake better, have more glass, etc, but are they better?

Its's exactly like the Corvette arguement. 63-67, 68-73, 1980-81, new one, blah, blah blah...if I found a 63 Corvette Split-window big block etc and sold it for a bazillion dollars, BUT I don't like the car personally, is it the 'best' year of Vette??? The money factor is huge...

Mike DC

I kinda disagree, DOH fan or not.  IMHO the 2nd-gen car was awesome & timeless in appearance.  Shows like Bullitt and DOH just brought some extra attention to it.

Kinda like the 2000 "Gone in 60 Seconds" remake, and the prices of 1967/68 fastback Mustangs shooting up afterward.  Did the movie cause it all?  No.  It was a great looking car that had been a bit undervalued at the time, and the movie just helped remind people what it had always been.

I mean, the "Starsky & Hutch" movie sold a decent box-office take in 2004, but the values of Torinos haven't really gone up much since then.  It's just not as much of a sought-after classic musclecar no matter what a movie does to glorify it.

That's a rather ignorant statement, nakita, especially if you were "there," as you say.  I wasn't exactly "there" and I still know Chargers had a lot of attention and a damn loyal following before that show came around.  Of course Chargers were low in value at that time, every car is reaching the nadir of it's value from 10-15 years after production.  That's just how it works.  The Dukes may have spawned a few fans who otherwise wouldn't have noticed the car, but they didn't create the interest by a long shot.  They were just jumping on board.

Simply put... the 2nd gen Charger are just plain cool. :punkrocka:

Yep, you're right, my 72 drove much smoother then the 69 but the 69 looks ten times better. I know when I spent $$$ on the mechanic part, it will look and performe as no other muscle car does. Look at  NYCMilles Charger!

First off, I really do love all three original generations of Charger. That said, I think the statement about the 1st and the 3rd gen styles being closely copied by other makers is true. The early fastbacks is reminiscent of the marlin and the 71-74s look a bit like the same year roadrunners. The 68-70's are truely designed like no other car at all. The 68-70s are also kind of one of those memorable classic muscle car styles, the door & hood stamps, the sleek tunnelback windows, the clean looking blacked out grille and rear ends & those killer looking (69-70) thin taillights ....unforgetable...

rare69

the reason every body wants a 2 gen charger is simple, they are the most beautiful car ever made, even ford and Chevy guys like them.if you did a poll on a non mopar related site and asked people which car looks better, the 1 st gen,2 gen or 3 gen i can promise you it wouldn't even be close.

4402tuff4u

Because overall the 2nd gen Chargers give you just about everything you (my opinion) are looking for on a muscle car. 1. Awesome looking design - simple at that, 2. The power train gives you good horsepower and the ability to be tweaked upwards, 3. Good size car for the family, 4. Good overall performance, but the greatest reason is the awesome design!! :icon_smile_tongue:
