Hello,  I'm looking to replace my OEM carb on a 1970 383  stock 10:1 slugs and my cam has a little better lift than a magnum grind cam.  Nothing radical.  Looks like my existing carb is a 625cfm carter avs.  The secondaries are slightly bigger than primaries.  Too many rebuild kits and the fact that is 35+ years old I think it's time for replacement.  Constant flooding issues when coming to stops and other concerns. I'm thinking of a 600-625 cfm edlebrock to replace it with.  Don't like Holley's.  Not so concerned to gain big power,  but dependable driveability is a must.  Any input appreciated.

getting a rebuild kit will cost you at minimum $200.00 less than buying a new one.  Pull that AVS off, rebuild it, then put it back on.  The kits come with instructions, so it is really not difficult.

If you do want a different carb, get a edelbrock 1406.  Not maintenance intensive, nor is it hard to tune your engine with it.  I take it you are not a crazy racer and that carb will be good enough for mild street duty if ya know what I mean.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET RID OF THE ORIGINAL CARBURETOR.  Store that puppy in a ziplock bag and box it for safe keeping.

hope this helps.

I'm running an Eddy  1405 on my 383   and it works great!!!    I didn't have to do any rejetting or anything to it.   A very low maintenance carb in my book.   But   I'm sure there will be other chime ins.  This is just what works for me.....Gas mileage isn't bad either!!!
