i have a question i hope somebody can shed some light on. i have a person from australia who wants to buy a car i have for sale. he seems pretty legit. he was looking for shipping quotes and e-mailed me and wanted a copy of the title. he said the shipping companies wanted to see it. does this sound legit or some kind of BS? i have never delt with anything like this before and dont want to get screwed. thanks guys for any help you can give!

G'day,

mate, a couple of years ago I bought a 71 Super Bee from the States, and I know exactly what the guy is going through., He needs a copy of the title to show Customs. Personally, I got the US owner to photograph the title, with my details as the new potential owner, and then when he emailed it to me I just had a picture printed down here and submitted it with my paperwork.

What other problems do you have ? I'm glad to give advice if I can. It was a worrying time for me as the buyer also. What kind of car is it ?

Sorry....should have also said that you don't give him the ORIGINAL.....just a copy so they can see something in writing. You keep the original title until he's paid for it.

I never saw the original till the car arrived in Australia.

Hi Itchyballs.

Like Peter I am also from Australia,

I bought a car from the US a couple of months ago. He probably is a legit buyer... the car needs to have a clear title or other proof of ownership for it to even leave the u.s. As a buyer from overseas that is a pretty big thing, imagine buying a car in another country and then finding you cant get it out of there. He would have to try and resell it or get other paperwork to get export approval which could take months in that time he would need somewhere to store the car which could also be expensive.

As for needing it to look for shipping quotes I don't know, I guess that company just wants to be sure it is "suitable" for export. And then able to gain import approval into australia.

I agree with Peter, its pretty stressful as a buyer too. I never actually saw the title of my car before I paid for it but the exporter I used in LA knew the seller anyway so I was confident everything would be ok :)

yeah they will need to see a copy of it that will be fine BUT don't put no ones name on there just yet cause if he doesn't take it then it's more hassles you don't wanna go through when you sell later. when he pays for the car then you MAIL the title with some sort of tracking to the port where the car is going to be shipped from ( usually los angeles area ). good luck to ya.

thanks guys for all of your input. you hear about so  many scams going on i guess i get paranoid. it is a 1976 dodge coronet four door he wants to buy from me...

COKE

I  also boughta my charger in the states a couple of years ago.
It will need a clear title and a Purchase agreement contrat signed by the buyer and the seller.
It will be enough with this.
