Just pulled the engine and tranny on my 1972 Charger Rallye. Numbers we found on the engine are as follows:

Left underneath head above freeze plug: 3698630.400.1

Left side by motor mount: 3.13.72

Car was originally equipped with 400 4-bbl. Build date was 5/22/1972

Vin number is WH23P2A194221.

IS THIS THE ORIGINAL MOTOR?

Did you compare the VIN stamping on the right side of the engine to the VIN number? That will tell you if it is or isn't.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

Vin number on motor/tran & dash should match.  The fender tag for a 440 -4bbl is E86.  The fender tag for a 400 -4bbl is E68.
