I am the guy that IT professionals hate...

I would say that I am "somewhat" literate when it comes to computers, but I definitely have this "I can fix anything attitude".  It has to be from the whole male pride issue.  It is definitely something I regret and despise about my self now.

I had a trojan virus "IRC MocBot..." something or other get on my comp at work.  It is a federal computer, so take that under advisement.  I decided to see if my McAfee would not just detect the darn thing anymore, but actually delete it.  Nope, it decided that it was just going to keep telling me about this trojan virus on my comp affecting my "services.exe" file.

So, since the anti-virus program decided that it was unworthy (or so my peon brain thought at the time), I was going to eradicate that bastard myself.  I get sophos, kaspersky, and trend and nothing kills it.

The light bulb flashes in my brain!  I can just use kaspersky to kill the process of the exec file, delete it, then replace it!

WRONG!!!!

I done kilt da computer.  It will not boot now.

My IT guys, I am sure, despise my stoopid butt, and I just started my internship so my supervisor is probably regretting bringing me in.

Well, the computer is able to be fixed, that is not a problem, but my reputation has been tarnished (rightfully so, I was a moron).

How many of you have done cornballed your computer's at work and got IT guys PO'd at you?  or,.... it could just be me as the only one. :D  I am pretty sure Troy will some delightful comments directed towards me on this one  :icon_smile_blackeye:

I do not do PC support and I surely won't try to "fix" a work computer! Those support/admin guys get all bent out of shape if you mess with their precious configuration. I can imagine that it's 10 times worse in a government office. I'm sure you'll be be the subject of many rants for weeks to come and you'll likely get everyone else locked down so even the non-IT people will give you dirty looks. I am lucky that I have admin access to my computers because of the development work but they can take it away at any time... :(

Good luck!

It is their fault. If the IT guys had been doing thier job you would not have caught it in the first place. A big system like that should have a massive virus protection plan in place with all computers having protection. Where I work part time taking care of things we have a virus definition server that checks the internet for updates and then sends updates out to all the computers we have in the building. The IT guys also should have had better protection on the email server side of things. Although not 100% it can knock down lots of problems before they get to the user.

Also having the computer locked down so you cant do any additional things also would have helped.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Our IT guys have one way to fix anything - re-image the computer with the "supported image load"

Which means everything that you've added, worked on, saved, etc. will be wiped clean. You will have what amounts to a new PC as far as the OS and software is concerned.

So, I do everything myself. I keep my own backups, too. (which reminds me - I need to do a backup before I finish my vacation)

I did look at it... :D

Did it need fixing? It couldn't possibly be as bad as CudaKen's! That thing took about 4 hours of tinkering just to get it responding correctly again. I had a lot more time there though. Do I need to make another trip to the great northwest?

Ouch..that was harsh !!
Actually it is your fault for going to websites that are outside of the "trustworthy networks" or opening unknown emails etc.
You cannont blame the man who makes the bullets when someone gets shot.
or the guy who built your car when you have 1 too many and wreck.

Amongst other things, I am a Security Admin where I work. we lock EVERYBODY down.
We have very specific rules to follow, and if you do things that you shouldnt, you get problems.
I have had 2 viruses in the last 3 years. its like sex, practice it safely !!!
