Did they us this 5 louver door on 72 Chargers?

I need a straight on high Q pic of the 71/72?, 5 louver RT door. I have a door that needs body work and I need to make sure the recreation of this door is accurate. Even measurements could help. Also, do they make a patch panel of these louvers like they do the Cuda's?

Gary42

Actually they did use the 5 louvers on the 72's, on the Rally cars that is. I have a 72 Rally car so I know it did come with the 5 louvers and the bulge hood. No, they do not make a patch panel for them although it would be nice. The only way to get them right is to get exact measurements or try to buy a good door from someone, but good luck on that one as they go for a bit of money now-a-days.

I have a set of rallye doors that are rusted out on the bottom but you could probably cut the louvers off and fab them into a donor door.

Here's a pic from a 72 Rallye.

Daytona Guy

Thank you for the pic, great job and fast. This board and you guys are the best.

OOOOOOOOOOO that pic makes me drool!!! Are they symmetrically the same or are all of them different? (each louver)

Agreed! - Might be a neat custom crossover for the second gen. (blasphemy?)

It would be cool to see done, but keep in mind the 68-70 doors have much more crispness to the stampings where the 71-74 are much more smoothly bulged. It would take a lot of fab work to get it to look "right". Your best bet to accomplish the look, in my opinion, would be to hand stamp a piece of flat sheet and replace the door scallops with it. Man, that would take some hours...

I believe the decals were all black. Repro might be different colours.

I bought a set of 71 doors that were pretty rusty and cut the outer panels off and threw the door shells out. My plan is to cut the depressed areas out along with the upper body line and convert my doors on my rust free 74 charger. I also found one of those 71 hoods with the louvered center area. Should make one wild ride with the six pack 4-speed setup that I've been saving. I've been trying to get Gary (gary42) to buy the car and all of the parts that I've gathered since he's the 3rd gen guy around here. I really don't have the time to build this car since we've started building the daytona parts. Gary42 has a real 72 hemi orange rally car that he and one of my body men are building.

Hotrod, if you are converting that door, the BOTTOM body line is different too. 71-2 doors are quite different from 73-4. The fenders and quarters are different too.

.........You are probably right Chargerguy'..........you usually see more nice 72 rallyes than 71 R/T's.Becuase of the lower production numbers for 71.But overall I have always liked the 72 Rallye's they are like the 71's younger brother. :yesnod:
Having a door poll would be like having a voting poll for a 70 or 71 Cuda...........pointless.
Now if you talk about a poll betwenen 71-72'Charger's and the 73-74'Charger's that would be interesting.........
And we know which year's would win!............Sorry Natcho!(lol) :icon_smile_big:

j/k

And If I just add the Hemi my 74 will be better handling ad softly ( Petty is able to confirm that :D )

Obviously, you've never seen my work. I could build a brand new 71 door from scratch if someone had enough money. I'm well aware of the differences in doors. I've already placed the panel up against the door on my 74 and I've marked where to cut both panels. I'll alter the upper body lines only since the lower lines on one of the 71 doors has that line pretty much rusted away.  I also plan to convert the rear of the quarters to resemble a 71-72 style quarter and will use the 71 trunk lid and quarter extensions. Since no one seems to want this rust free '74 that I have, I'm going to start altering it to the point that no one will be able to quite figure out what year it is. Should be a lot of fun. May even alter one of my daytona noses to fit as well as one of the fiberglass daytona wings. Should make a wild looking g-series daytona. Kind of wished that I hadn't sold that rusty sunroof car now. Could have cut that sunroof setup out for this car as well.
I'm also building a superbird clone that will look somewhat like a superbird only much wilder. I'm using a 70 coronet R/T double scooped hood , a modified bird nose with the small headlamps mounted down low, cuda gills in the fender and 19" and 18" wheels with big brakes. I have a complete fresh six pack motor and will use a Keisler 6 speed with all leather interior. Stay tuned.

Hotrod, sounds like some radical stuff there! I'm glad you notice the quarter differences, most guys don't catch that. Let's see some pics soon!

hotrod98

I think I can alter the lower body line on the 74 doors to mimic the lower body lines on the 71-72 doors. Would have been easier if the lower lines on my panels hadn't been rusted away. But of course I wouldn't even have these doors if they had been much nicer. I like the body lines on the 71-72 version chargers and personally think that they shouldn't have changed them in 73. I found these doors accidentally when I went to a guys house to look for a bulge hood. Turns out the guy actually had an R/T louvered hood and he let me have the hood, the doors, the trunk lid and the quarter extensions all for $400. The hood and the trunk stuff were rust free.

I'm a huge fan of the 71-72s, but I'd choose the 73-74s over them everytime. Like nacho I just prefer the look. The HP nubers didn't fall enough to scare me off either.

Personally, not because I own a 72 Rallye, I like the 71-72 Charger's. Remember in 73 they started to put all the safety crap on them, so needless to say they extended the front and back bumpers. Put those big assed black bumper guards on them, extended the rear windows, changed the body lines, and put those terrible looking grills on the extended rear window.
The body lines on the 71-72's look so much cleaner and sharper compared to the 73-74 Charger. Overall they really screwed up when they went from 72 to 73/74. I got lucky in some ways when I bought my Rallye, but I would probably have bought Hotrods ride if I had not bought my Rallye first as his is a very nice rust free car and well worth the money he would take for it.

Goldfinger71  They only built 773 more 72's than 71's.

As far as the decals go all 72 Rallyes had black ones. You can get them in different colors but they are die stamped out of colored decal paper. The factory ones were screened onto clear decal paper.

Goldfinger71

Hey KM'
I was pretty aware of that, that's why I stated in a previous post that they built more 72'Rallyes than 71 R/T's............

Let's be educational. Sense this can keep the threads theme, lets post pics of the differences of the 71-72    73-74 doors and fenders. Make the pics clearly defined. I think this will be a good education for everyone.

Hi, does anyone have any measurements for the door louvers on a 72 Charger Rallye?  I've seen the great picture and I could probably get pretty close just by using the picture and buying the decals, but if I had some actural measurements it would be nice to be spot on instead of just guessing it.  Thanks very much for your help.

BROCK

Differences between the 71/72 & the 73/74 abound.
Front valence mounting holes are moved.
Front fender wheel opening is raised & some of the fender mounting holes are moved.
73/74 doors are 2" lower at the top of the rear where they meet the quarter panel.
73/74 quarter hips are lower & have more of a shelf to them (similar to 2nd gen).  Makes
em look wider!
I thought the trunk lids might still be the same? :shruggy:

Obviously there are those that prefer 1 over the other.  The 71 R/T is my fave of the
3rd gens - but take away the side stripe & the 73-74 body is the coolest.  Except for
that isolated front suspension, I would trade my 72 for a 73/74.
