fuel tank repair kit

I took my Charger in for a carb rebuild & tune-up and the carb, gas filter & gas were loaded with rust.  I guess sitting around since last fall during the engine rebuild, the gas tank was half full & without stabilizer and it got rust on the inside.

so I need to drain the tank and clean & check everything out.

Kanter has a fuel tank repair kit that includes cleaner, metal-readt and tank sealer.

has anybody used this?
can you buy it in a store (NAPA?) instead of ordering it through a catalog?
will the kit eliminate this happening again?

I have used a similar product years ago with great results. It'll patch up pin holes fine but be leary of larger ones. I put in a length of chain in first and shook it up to knock off any scaly rust on the inside. Follow the directions and it should work fine.

Think it over........................I would install new - at least the tank. The goose neck filler tube can probably be sandblasted, including the most important part, the interior of the pipe. If your carb ever gave you more headaches, you will always wonder if the rust is re-appearing and causing the problem. Just my two cents.

I agree. If there was rust particles in the filter, the sock was probably knocked off or disintegrated. Get a new tank and sending unit from Quanta and play it safe.

I forgot to mention - I replaced the gas tank, sending unit, sock, etc 3 years ago when I got the Charger.

So I can't see replacing it all again unless things are really ugly when I get a look at the tank.  The first 2 winters I had a full tank of gas & stabilizer during storage.  This last winter was the only time the tank wasn't full - and it sat from last August to May this year.

I can't believe there's lots of damage from 1 winter, so that why I'm looking at the tank repair kit.

tomorrow I'm dropping the tank, I'll let you know what's up

so today I dropped the gas tank, and as I was hoping, it was clean as a whistle (see pics)

it also wasn't a bad load of gas - emptying the tank didn't show any rust either

I also blew out the gas line and no scum there either

so the only thing left that could be puking rust would be the vapor separator.  do these things rust out if they sit dry for a while?  tomorrow, I'm going to blow some air through it as well and see if anything comes out.

found the problem - the vapor separator is rusted on the inside.  I pulled if off tonight and gas the color of coffee came out

if anybody is rebuilding an engine, I recommend replacing it
