??? I don't have time to read through it all because I'm at work but I wonder how much BS is involved. If it sounds too good to be true... ???

I did a little reading about it from some other sources and they're talking about shale oil, or oil and natural gas trapped in shale rock. It seems there's some renewed effort right now to extract these fuel sources with the price of oil going up. There's lots of it but they can't yet seem to figure out how to extract it without expending more energy that they harvest. I guess the first link is someone trying to hype it up to sell shares.

http://emd.aapg.org/technical_areas/oil_shale.cfm "When the price of shale oil is comparable to that of crude oil because of diminishing resources of crude, then shale oil may find a place in the world fossil energy mix."

In a Mopar Collector's Guide here a while back they talked how a few oil reservoirs were closed down in Louisiana years ago and reopened recently and the oil had replenished itself in turn making the reserve's fuller than ever.

Yep, there is some sort of phenomena with the closed down oil wells. After shutting them down for a few years they can pump them again. They aren't exactly sure why yet.

I've read that the "refilling oil wells" thing is suspected to be nothing major.

The theory is that when they were pressurizing the oil to get huge amounts of it out of the well (water injection, etc.) the processes also forced small amounts of oil sideways & down into little cracks & crevices too.  So when they take the pressure off, the forced-away oil seeps back into the "empty" oil well.

There are a few people who claim it's proof of "abiotic oil" (which would change everything), but most scientists think there's all kinds of holes in that theory overall.

As I understand it, the Oil Shale issue is all about extractability.

Anybody who wants to prove that we're nowhere near an oil shortage can just point out that there's still LOADS of drude oil on the planet.  We just need to find better ways of extracting it in the future.  (Remember when people were talking about "Peak Oil" a couple years ago?  And Dubya pointed out that Canada has tar sands full of more oil that Saudi Arabia so we've got enough oil to last until at least 2038 or something?)

It's true, technically.

But in the real world, it's not likely that we'll ever find cost-effective ways to get much of the oil from situations like that.
Everybody's buying lots of middle-eastern oil because it's the cheapest high-grade stuff.
Oil in the Canadian tar sands, shale oil in Colorado . . . doesn't matter if it's not cheap.

Hypothetically, there could be oil under every state in the Union.  But if it would always take $300/barrel just to get it then it might as well be dogsh*t.  We could have a great big "Mad Max" style oil crisis, and switch to solar, and switch to wind, and stop driving, and everything.  That $300/barrel oil would still be sitting down there.

Oil at $300/barrel would equate to about $12.85/gal. for gas. I'd still pay that much to drive my Charger but not much else. Maybe a motorcycle. I have to wonder what the breaking point would be? How high can the price of gas get before people just flat-out refuse to buy it?

Probably $20 a gallon.  When it costs more to go to work than it does to pay your mortgage, people might start moving closer to work or changing jobs so that they can walk to work like the "good ol days".  this doesnt help people in the country though.

depends on people, a trucker that I know would just write it off on taxes. He don't care that much what the price of fuel is right now
