Firefighters shot at for not helping cat

KINGMAN, Ariz. - A man angry at firefighters who refused to rescue a cat from a tree was arrested after he started shooting at the fire crew, officials said.

Jeffrey Cullen, 58, was charged with four felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Mohave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said.

A three-person fire crew went to Cullen's home Thursday when he reported a tree fire, but found no blaze, Hualapai Valley Fire Department spokeswoman Sandy Edwards said.

Instead, Cullen told firefighters he wanted a cat rescued from his tree and knew they would only respond to a fire call, Edwards said. A battalion chief told Cullen to call animal control or wait for the cat to get hungry and come down.

Cullen apparently didn't like the response, Edwards said.

"He went back into the house, got a small black revolver and came outside shooting," she said.

The firefighters and a 12-year-old boy who had come to see the fire truck ran for their lives, Edwards said. No one was injured.

Deputies arrested Cullen after a brief standoff and struggle.

1 is to many for me. Im not a cat person. I actually had to pay a fine one time because my dogs were inside there fenced in yard and would bark all the time at this cat that came into my yard taunting them on the other side of the fence and piss in my flower garden. The judge said there isnt any law against cats roaming free and theres nothing I could do about it.

I agree with Lowprofile. It sure as hell isn' the cat's fault, he was not the one with the gun, maybe he was trying to get away from the shooter.And as far as there being too many idiots & cats in the world well to the first all I can say is it takes one to know one & if people had not tamed cats to begin with there would not be an issue of overpopulation of cats or dogs that die every day because people do not apparently believe in preventing needless death by spaying & neutering their cats & dogs. Quite a few people could use some spaying & neutering too!! If folks did not let their animals wander all over everywhere this crap could be prevented, especially with all of the cat hating folks around. Human gene pool is getting more & more shallow by the minute.

The cat was the guys only friend I bet. At least no one was injured and after he gets out of jail something tells me he will keep his cat indoors, call it a hunch.

Well it sure as hell will not be the same cat, that cat will probably be long gone by the time he gets out.  Sorry to by a cynic but people never learn, they love to make excuses & reasons they believe in their own minds for the things the do & the things they do not. Having volunteered in animal rescue for many years I have seen the worst in people & the good in people too. Unfortunately, the worst is leading by a landslide!

Great post Ghoul! I find it strange how some people have no problem with a cat being killed, but treat the death of a dog similarly to that of a human being.

Maybe because other than them both being house pets, dogs serve more of a meaningful purpose in this world being police, search and rescue, guide dogs and assisting people with medical problems etc as opposed to making a good chinese meal.

It makes them no more valuable than any other animal. Different purposes, same value. Besides, ask anyone who has eaten one. They taste way better than any cat.

I'm not a big dog fan myself. I rather see a dog killed then a cat. I'm not saying I hate dogs totally as I do like some breeds as long as they are not mine, but...

*Dogs crap all over the place outside and then you have to watch where you walk or play (least a cat keeps to the littler box if you keep it cleaned)
*Dogs attack people way more then cats (I know that first hand as I been bit in the face and almost had my left hand chewed off, and neither time I did not do anything to make the dog mad)
*Dogs cost more in general to take care of.
*You dont have to take your cat for a walk.
*Dog are way noisier then cats. (I hate a dogs barking when you like a halk a block away, or because the moon it out at night)
* I like a animal that is independent and can take care of it's self.
*And cats give just as much love and affection as ant dog can.

I'm not saying cats are perfect, yes they do have some down sides. I just prefer them.

I've got nothing against having a dog as a pet (owned a couple in fact), but many people don't give dogs the time/love/discipline they need and consequently they become problem animals.

Never seen a cat chase down and then maul anyone either.
