Is it OK to support the car with jack stands placed on the rear axel?

I don't see why not.  Unless you're trying to get the rear tires off a early '65-'67 B body.

 :iagree: Try to keep them as close to the wheels as possible. The wider the stands, the more stable the car will be when you're working on it.  ;)

except if you will remove springs or related, axle itself, install rear swaybar... conclusion if you need to make a job where need to release the U bolts, everything will be fine then
