WHAT IS IT??

My buddy asks me to identify an engine for him today. We pull the tarp off the engine, and I have no idea.....   It's not in a car so that doesn't give any clues. It is a newer engine as it is injected and has aluminum heads and a plastic intake plenum.. The valve covers are also alum. and it looks as though each head has it's own cam.. The block is cast iron and last clue I have is that it has a PENTESTAR moulded into the intake..

One more thing.   The spark plugs go straight down into the heads from the top. NOT like a hemi with the plug between the valves.. At the closest edge of the heads toward the intake.....

???      What is it     ???

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Pic, as far as it bring a morden day Hemi have seen two and yet to see the engine, with all the stuff stock on them I could see engine. You would think they where hiding something. It not just Ma Mopar, but all of them. Was looking at a 3.8 Supercharged GM last week, never saw the screw blower, 3.8. Just some cast thing that said it was under pressuer?

Unless Ma Mopar is making intake plenum's for Caddy, I don't think it's a Caddy engine..

I will look up a 4.7L though.. So far I have had no luck finding pics. of late model Mopar engines with the exception of the new Hemi......

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  Especially if they have access to the internet.

They replaced the 318 with the 4.7 in the Durango in 2000 I believe. I bought mine to tow my boat so I looked for the 5.9, my brother inlaw bought one after me it had the 4.7 in it. I dorve it it has nice power but you are correct it is really different then the 318 (5.2) or the 360 (5.9).

My Ram has a 4.7 and I love that little motor. It gets good milage and still pulls the race car trailer well.  My GMC had the 377 Vortec in it and it towed the trailer at 75 with no problem but only got 6-8 MPG when towing.  The 4.7 gets 10-11 MPG towing at about 65 but it won't honk it at 75 but it seems a fair trade off.

A buddy of mine has that engine in a Dakota Sport that he bought around 5 years ago,  Until I looked at the engine, I didn't even know mopar was making a V-8 overhead cam engine,,the truck is surprisingly quick.

Called my buddy this afternoon to tell him what it was and he had spoke to the owner an hour before.. It came out of a 2001 Dakota.  Rod knock....  He is going to donate it to the local high school...

my 4.7 was a DOG(2004 dodge ram). had a hemi first(2003 ram) , and shouldhave never gotten rid of it. it got 1 stinking MPG better than my hemi, and pulled my trailer/charger HORRIBLY. it can't go uphill without downshifting. unreal. i wil NEVER give up the 5.7 again. i just got my new '05 ram last week.

I just got a Ram with the 4.7 in it. I have just started using it a bit. I have it and I am inmpressed with it. It won't break any land speed redcords but it gets the job done. I like it, It was money well spent. 1400 miles in two weeks.
