That 41plymouth that is for sale in El Paso on East Yandell street is where our family's business is at. (1610 east Yandell).  Small world!!

We gre up in the 70's going to the El Paso Dragway many times.  Saw Garlits, Muldownery, Prudhomme, etc.  Thtose pics were before they put up the grandstands!!

Those were the days!!!

Thanks alot for the link!!! :icon_smile_big:

I'm always struck by how the paint finishes look in old photos.  To me that's one of the biggest giveaways about whether a pic of a 40-year-old car is really a vintage moment or an event that happened more recently.

There's never much rust on the cars back in the day, but the factory paintjobs might as well be "semi-gloss."  Particularly on anything hi-po that might get run hard.  And when a car is painted something other than the factory, the "bright" color shades they picked (red, blue, etc) are often still darker than what a similar project car would use today.

True dat! :yesnod: I've thought the exact same thing.
Take this pic for example. Assuming this was taken at approximately the same time frame as the others marked "Oct 68", the white ford truck in this pic is either a '65 or '66 (the grill would tell for sure), so that would make it a maximum of  maybe 4 years old in this pic. Taking into consideration that white doesn't show off a shine as well as other colors & it probably hasn't been washed in a while, that could account for some of the dinginess...but look, it looks like it's already 15 years old!

Cool site, Strat! I like the narration that goes with the pics too.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

The author of that site didn't like the old camaros lol

QuoteThose Camaros are very sorry looking cars from the back. To begin with, the car has no "ass" end. The rear fenders and trunk area are just not adequate considering the bulk of the top of the car. I always disliked this proportioning intensely. The trunk and rear fenders sort of slither inward, reducing the volume back there even more. The tail lights are boring. Even more mundane than '70 Maverick tail lights.

QuoteThe Lead Ballon, a 302 powered '41 Plymouth takes on, heads up a '69 Dodge Super Bee with a 426 Hemi. There was no candyass brackett racing here. You raced what you brought. All racing here was heads up. Thanks to a set of 538 gears the Lead Ballon got a hole shot on the mighty Hemi that proved just to much for the Hemi. "The Kid" could see, and hear the mighty Hemi gaining on the '41 at a hell of a rate. The front of the Super Bee was raised higher and higher as it was pushed forward by the powerful engine. As "The Kid" looked in his mirror the green Dodge kept a coming and a coming. Just a moment after crossing the 1/4 mile marker the Hemi flew past the Lead Ballon almost blowing it off the road. This was racing, win or lose, no crying, no explanations, no horse shit. Just race.

They mention one thing I had totally forgoten about was the use of straight front axles. The donners were often times Ford or Chev. half ton vans. One of the best looking cars at school was a 55 Chev with a 283 and a 3spd. with an Econoline front axle under it.Us younger kids used to drool :drool5: over that car.
