WATKINS GLEN, New York (Ticker) - Evernham Motorsports officially fired Jeremy Mayfield on Friday.

The move comes two days after Evernham announced that veteran Bill Elliott would replace Mayfield in the No. 19 Dodge Charger for Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Watkins Glen.

Mayfield slipped to 36th in the standings this year after finishing ninth in last season's "Chase for the Championship."

"It was purely performance," owner Ray Evernham said of the decision to dismiss Mayfield. "The car and the team is not where it should be. We're out of the top 35 in points. We just haven't delivered as a group."

Evernham Motorsports has struggled this season outside of Kasey Kahne's exploits. Kahne has won four races this season, but Evernham has collected no top-five finishes and just five top-10s from its other two primary drivers - Mayfield and Scott Riggs.

It has been widely speculated that Elliott Sadler will replace Mayfield next season.

Mayfield got screwed when Evernham took his team and crew chief - a team that made the Chase two years straight and was on the verge of getting it together - and gave it to the overrated marketable pretty boy.

Mayfield is one of the most over rated driver's out there. His only shining moment was bumping Dale Sr. out of the way on the last corner at Pocono for his first win. He was dismissed from the Mobil car several years ago when he was driving for Roger Penske. Mike Wallace took over the wheel for the rest of the season and there was a dramatic improvement in the teams performance. Mayfield should fit right in with Mikey Waltrip on the over rated has been team. You have to wonder if he wanted to get fired since he was talking with Mikey for the last month about joining his new team.

Elliot Sadler in my opinion would be a step up in driving performance. He isn't a great driver either, but better than Mayfield. Evernham made a good choice in putting Mayfields crew chief with Kahne.

You mean...  Jeremy Minefield??   He can take a good car and blow it up!!!   Mayfield is a good driver for the Busch or ARCA series.  He is a talented driver, but not at the Cup level.

One thing though,  Mayfield drives race cars for a living.  I drive a Tahoe at work and spend a lot of time in an office.  So, I have to give him that much credit...

Latest on the Mayfield-Evernham legal battle: Jeremy Mayfield's immediate legal challenge to the terms of his firing by Evernham Motorsports has been resolved. Mayfield, who was released Monday, filed the request for an injunction in North Carolina Superior Court in Iredell County. Whether he could have gotten in the #19 car Friday is unclear as Bill Elliott pracaticed and qualified at Watkins Glen International. There was a hearing on the injunction Friday in North Carolina, and the parties had agreed in principle to settle after the hearing, a Dodge spokesman confirmed Friday night. The two sides released a statement Saturday morning: "Jeremy Mayfield, Mayfield Motorsports, Inc., and Evernham Motorsports LLC announced that they have agreed to end their relationship effective immediately. The parties agree that it is in their mutual best interests to go in different directions and wish each other success in the future." Elliott Sadler is expected to take over the #19 car in 2007 but possibly will take over the driving duties soon.(SceneDaily.com), looks like at Michigan next weekend.(8-13-2006) Jayski.com

hahaha...the Nazis at moparts just deleted my post on the equivalent thread over there. some dude got offended cuz I said judging by all the adoring posts about Kahne, one would think that they were lining up to perform certain acts upon him. thats why I like this site and the mods here.
