There were three different Dana 60's used in B bodies and the major dimensions like housing width, overall width and spring perch centers are the same as the 8 3/4" of the same year. These are the correct B body dimensions:

Housing width

'66-'67= 54 1/4"
'68-'70= 54 15/16"
'71-'74= 57 7/8"

Rear end widths, drum-to-drum

'66-'67= 59 1/2"
'68-'70= 60 1/8"
'71-'74= 63"

Spring perch widths (center-to-center)

'66-'70= 44"
'71-'74= 47.3"

I bought a 69 Satellite 318 parts car. I bought the car cheap for the bench seat and the grill. My friend looks under the rear which I expected was open. He says it is a Dana 44 (not 60) but did not count the bolts. What do I look for to determine, and is it possible the 9 3/4 rear?

No Mopar passenger car used the Dana 44; a '69 Satellite with a 318 would most likely have a 7 1/4" or possibly an 8 1/4" rear end.

The Dana 60 was reserved for 440 and Hemi 4-speed cars or as an option on some other BB installations.

Perhaps someone swapped in a 9 1/4" Chrysler under that Satellite too as they look somewhat similar. The Dana will have a raised "60" in the casting.

Also most 9 1/4's had taperd axle housing or tubes no mistaking one of those.

It's not likely to be any type of Dana 44 under a '69 Mopar.  More likely it's a stock Mopar 8.25" axle in a 1969 318 car.  The 318s still had the banjo-style 8.75" rears in 1968, but in 1969 they started using the slightly-weaker 8.25" rears on the smallblock cars.  (The 8.25" is not a BAD rearend at all, but it's just that not many people want to build up an 8.25" rear when a stronger 8.75" is still pretty affordable & common for the same bodystyles.)

I'll bet a Dana 44 would probably be a cool setup if somebody retrofitted it though.

There's a ton of aftermarket support for that axle and it's not quite as heavy as a Dana 60.  Since it's still being used by the factories, they're making all kinds of gearsets & limited-slip/locker setups.  We'll probably never be able to buy some of that stuff for our traditional Mopar 8.75" diffs.  (These days you can buy a stock-type limited-slip diff setup for the Dana 44 that also has a switchable electric full-locking setup built into it.  How cool is that?)

I don't know exactly how strong a Dana 44 really can be, but it's gotta be pretty decent if DCX is putting it in stick-shifted Vipers with 500 lb-ft and 335mm rear tires.
