'68 clock?

I had a question I couldn't find the answer to.

I have '68 R/T with a missing clock/tic-toc-tach.  Using the search I found a great thread already in which 8Wheeler and Just 6T9_CHGR posted some fantastic shots of the firewalls of cars with and w/o the tic-toc-tack.  With that said, I discovered that my car has the "dimple" in the firewall and, thus, never came with the tach.  Correct?

Okay, my questions:
- Did all Chargers (in 68) come with either the clock or tach?

- I have seen clusters with "block" plates at swap meets, etc...labeled "68,69,70 Charger" and yet have never seen one installed in a Charger.  Were these an option as well? (they look like crosshairs).  Or just some idiots who are mistaken.

- Considering I'm 90% sure my car came with a clock, are the different years interchangeable. (i.e. Can I buy a '69 and it be correct for my '68?)

- Did all 68 Chargers come with a "rallye dash"?  Or are only clusters with a tach considered a "rallye?"

I asked the previous owner if he knew what came with the car and he stated that it was removed when he bought it.  Figures.

Thanks for any help you guys can give. ;D  And I apologize if this was already covered (I couldn't find anything on the block plates).

terrible one

If you have the dimple but no hole, then your car never came with a tach. You're correct.

I've seen the block-off plates a few times, but only in a cluster once. This was on Ebay. I really wouldn't know about that, because as far as I know, the clock came standard. Maybe someone smarter will chime in with information about a clock delete.

I'm pretty sure the clocks are interchangeable between all 2nd gens.

I believe the clock delete was a 70 only thing........never seen it in a 68-69

Chris,

Now that you say so, I believe that it might have been a 70 cluster I saw with the clock deleted. It was either a '69 or '70 for sure.

Once again, you guys are awesome. ;D

Thanks for the help and thanks for the clarification.  I've never seen the block plate with the exception of ebay/swap meets so I was suspicious to say the least.  And I'm positive that the person(s) selling them had labelled them as "68, 69, 70."

So now I know....thanks!

only 70 had the block off clock option. that is correct. also, yes all 68 clusters in 68 were considered "rallye" on chargers, whether they had a tach or not. never knew the dimple firewall thing. how interesting

Ok...now that brings a question up on my end....My car did not come equipped with the tic toc tach,   but just the clock  with the seconds around the outer perimeter.   BUT.....the hole that houses the harness for the tach is there.   It's not a dimple, but the hole.  And....It's a factory cut.  Any reason why this would be?   I noticed a lot of mistakes upon buying this car....not only that, but the side marker reflectors....instead of two red in the rear and two amber in the front...it had amber on all four corners.   the VIN  number has an extra "D" in it,  The console, when it was there, was never screwed down to the front bracket because there are no holes in that bracket where screws could've gone.   (quality control?)   It had electric windows, but upon yanking out the old carpet,  there were two rear crank handles underneath, which were factory parts.  I understand that the black stripes in the hood where the turn signals are housed are supposedly for R/T cars only...but mine had them.   And...the trunk floor pans....there was absolutely NO or NO INDICATION OF EVER BEING bracketry for the jack.   The fender tag states that this had a black vinyl top but actually had a white one.  Wasn't that a white hat special only option?   And the seats  when they were still factory, they  had leather insets with vinyl skirting  which I thought was only an R/T option.  My seat tracks seem to be different too....there's like three bars going cross wise, as opposed to the ones i see everywhere else which just have the two bottom rails with one side adjustment instead of 2.   This number on the fender tag.....966873....I'm told that the cars beginning with "96"  are special order cars or special purpose cars....usually a pilot car or something,  and at the Charger registry,  I'm told that he only had one other documented "96" car,  but there is nothing about this car that would support that info.  The last numbers of the vin are 29D3339.   Definately not the first one....so that raises a question.   I think my car was probably assembled on a Monday, when the workers were hungover or something and just "spanked" it down the assembly line.  (There's that "D" I was speaking of in the vin by the way.)   Any thoughts?   Why I ended up with such a f**ked up car?....lol.....Oh....and my pedals  had the chrome ring around them which I thought was an R/T option only as well.........

JimShine

Many items you are calling R/T items are available as seperate options or are part of the SE package. I can't help with the mistakes. Maybe you should post your fender tag or broadcast sheet.

Brock Samson

yes the leather and pedal dress up are "Special Edition" tip offs...
interesting.. when was the build date?..

TylerCharger69

Here's all of the tag codes...keeping in mind  what I posted was on the car, and the fact that it was originally a 2 bbl  383...

V1X      26     END
J25      L31     M21     M31     P31     R11
B51     C16     C55     G11     G33     H51
    R4     C6X    X9    214    966873
E61     D32

This is exactly how it is on the tag.   I've already decoded all of this....but the mistakes on the car, and other issues...well...i dunno

ds440

Well, I know that you could have a white vinyl top and it NOT be a "white hat special."  My brother has a '69 that had a white top and didn't have the white hat code on his fender tag (code A41).

As for the truck pans and amber lights - do you know the previous owners?  They sound like someone changed them out....poorly....?

As for the black hood stripes and your various (and curious) interior options, it reminds me of a Challenger T/A that was in last month's Collector Guide.  (I'll paraphrase).  The original purchaser of the T/A really liked the interior of an RT/SE on the same lot.  So the dealer, not wanting to lose the sale, made the swap for a little extra cash.  MAYBE, something similar happened with your '69.  The original owner wanted the R/T interior and a few extra options and had the dealer swap it out.  Unless, of course you know the original owner (which I'm assuming you don't), all this is just speculation that I'm pulling out of my arse.... ;D

No idea about the "96" thing.  Never heard of that...but it's interesting.  Maybe someone "special" ordered a base Charger with the R/T interior?

BTW:  I did a quick search.  Your SPD is 214......a Friday.....I've always heard urban myths about cars made on Friday have those type of "quality control" issues. ;)

lol...okay...a Friday...in a hurry to get good and tanked  for the weekend to come back to work monday to do more crappy assembly...lmao...makes sense to me.   The older man I bought the car from  was the original owner.  He told me he used to drink a lot  and that the car got him in serious trouble, so, in 1972, he parked the car in his yard and never moved it.   I can believe that because it still had the black and yellow Cali plates, which I still have, and a 1973 expiration date on the plate sticker.  He never spoke of any options that he changed when he bought the car.  He did tell me that the car still had the zerk plugs in the front end components because it was never sent to the make ready department.   He drove it off right after it came off of the truck.   He also said  he didn't get hubcaps, or anything.   So basically...the car sat in the same spot for 24 years, getting buried in the sand in the Arizona desert.   Psssssst.....I bought it for 500 bucks...heh heh
