Could someone explain what a windowed block is?

I used to have a handle on life....but it broke off.

Its a block that put a rod through the side creating a "window" where there shouldn't be one. In other words, it blew up, putting a hole in it.

Just slap some JB weld in there and its as good as new, Man is that ugly sorry to say. I hope thats a picture of someone elses motor and not yours.
