It is 1.96 in town now, a whopping 56 cents of that (28.5%) is tax here in Washington State!

So if you earn a gross $1,000, the federal government will take 25% off the top (average federal income bracket).

So now you're at $750 (assuming no state income tax), and you go to buy gas, and they take another 28.5% out.

So you're left with $536 of your original $1,000 that is actually going to buy the gas, and $464 went to the government.

Yay!

Without the taxes your $1000 would buy over 714 gallons at today's prices.
1000 / (1.96-.56) = 714.25

With the taxes your $1000 only buys about 382 gallons at today's prices.
(1000*.75)/(1.96) = 382.65

Another $10.00 and gas should drop to around $1. - $1.30 a gallon like before Katrina hit. Oil was about $44. a barrel back then.

How many of you remember when gas went above a dollar, and a lot of the small-town (like where I grew up) "filling stations" had to adjust their pumps to charge by the half-gallon since it only went up to $0.99? $0.53 a half-gallon...lol.

Quick story (if I've told it before, I apologize; but it's a BigRed family classic): In 1977, we were driving from NE Ohio to Virginia Beach in our brand new, black 1977 Chrysler New Yorker. The little yellow dash light telling you you had an eighth-of-a-tank was new technology then, and somewhere in between home and the beach, it came on. My mom says to my dad, "Bill, you'd better get gas soon." Well, my dad kept ignoring her, and my mom was getting more nervous and more pissed off all at the same time...we passed a Boron, if memory serves, and my mom was like, "What was wrong with THAT one?!?" The price was $.59-nine, and my dad shot back, "IT'LL BE A COLD DAY IN HELL BEFORE I EVER PAY 60 CENTS A GALLON FOR GAS!!"...To keep my mom from killing him, and the embarrassment of running out of gas (the New Yorker had another new-fangled technology on it's 440 motor: "Lean-burn". Didn't wanna run THAT thing dry...), I think he paid 63 cents at the next exit. My mom resumed speaking to him 2 days later. It was a fun vacation. ::)

Side note: My mom said she'd quit smoking if cigarettes ever went over a buck-a-pack. She's still puffing camel non-filters.  :shruggy:
