To trade or not to trade.

That is the question. I am considering a trade for my 1969 Charger for this 1979 Tenth Anniversary Trans Am.

Keep in mind my car is not a real R/T, or numbers matching. It has however been taken down to the frame. I have replaced ALL the sheetmetal except for the roof and the hood. It has one of the best paint jobs I have ever seen. I have owned the car for 10 years.

The Trans Am is a beautiful car as well. Everything works. Original engine as well. And only 60,000 original miles.

The Trans Am is $17,000. I am working on a deal for $10,000 to $15,000 and the Trans Am for my car. My wife and I are looking at a lot larger home. The extra money would come in handy. My wife has already said that she does not want me to do it. Just looking for opinions. Thanks. . . Tim

Tim....you feeling OK ?  :P I can't believe you'd even consider such a thing. That Charger is beautiful....it would cost 35-40k minimum to replace it. Think about that before you make this deal. The only T/A worth a pinch of chit is a 70 HO 4 spd. Even then, i wouldn't trade straight up for your car.  :rotz:

I like trans ams myself, and honestly I wouldnt mind one. But if I was in your situation there is absolutely no way i would trade that charger for that trans am even if there is another 10-15k to boot. trans ams arent climbing in value like chargers are, you could probably keep the charger and watch the value grow, whereas the trans am would only be worth what you got into it, and no more.

just my 2 cents.

I appreciate the Trans Am 'n all but it aint a Charger,.. I'd keep it...
the firebird would be a nice car though,.. but still, no way.

I watch the pricing of those TAs alot. I wish I had bought a 77 8 years ago when they were still cheap. That car looks nice and I think its probably worth the $15k(tops) but unless your a full blown TA nut I think youll regret trading that nice looking charger for that car and also miss having a car with some balls. Youll probably never look at it the same and have a hard time warming up to it.

I like the 1979 10th Anniversary Trans Am's and they are rising in value along with the 77-80 Special Edition's but it would have to be a low mileage original with a 400 4 speed for it to even be a consideration. So to answer your question I wouldn't do that particular trade but if you need the extra money then  :shruggy:

1969 Charger R/T 440 4 speed

I would absolutely love a Trans Am. They are super cool. I have always loved the looks of those things. I will NEVER give up my 69....NEVER... By the way, I expect to see you again at Vin Devers Dodge on October 1st, I think. And you better have that gorgeous Charger with you.

Well, asking us this question on a Charger board you kinda'already knew what most(if not all)of us were going to say! :icon_smile_big:(lol)
Trans Am have always looked cool, but they are not known for there performance.............at all!Unless you are looking at the Super Duty TA's which have been bringing high dollar for years. :yesnod:

Yes,I as well wanted and still wouldn't mind having a Trans Am(heck Smokey and the Bandit was some of my favorite movies when I was younger!)
If you are also thinking about return on investment(in the years to come)bank on the Charger not the Trans Am.
Let's see...........what will it be..the "SCREAMING CHICKEN or the GENERAL LEE?....................

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

While I own a lot of mopars including a real 69 R/T Se triple black charger, I also own a few birds as well. I hate to admit it, but when I'm not driving one of my cudas, I'm usually driving my 79 T/A. With the Hotchkis suspension and the AGR steering, it drives better than any of the other cars that I own. I say do what feels right. I don't see the mopars continue to outpace the other muscle cars for much longer. The truth is, they're all getting harder to find and I think that you're going to see the Trans Ams start to go up in value pretty soon, especially the numbers matching anniversary cars and the SE cars. I don't think you'll regret trading the charger as much as you might think. Just start a savings plan and maybe you can find an even better charger later.

Well here is MY TA,  I do not think I would give up my charger, I LOVE THIS CAR though.

IMHO, this is one of the nicest new cars produced.  Some did not like the snout, I LOVE IT.  Car looks mean sitting.  BODY kit, heck who needs one.  This car will rip the tires off in 1st gear without a problem.

OHHH AND I WOULD NEVER GIVE UP THAT CHARGER OF YOURS.... THAT IS SWEET.

firefighter3931

You guys are all traitors.....i can't believe this "Poncho" luvfest we have here on a Charger board  :D

Truth be told, i like em too and a Pontiac is the only non mopar musclecar i'd ever consider owning. No bird though....it would have to be a 66 tri-power 4spd Goat.....black/black.

To the original poster ; i personally don't ever see a late model bird having the desirability of any 60's musclecar, let alone a Charger. The early T/A's (70-71) were cool with lots of spoilers, air dams and a shaker  :icon_smile_cool: but....the "anniversary edition" just isn't in the same league.   :Twocents:

:iagree:  I think this is already happening. The going price for a mint low mileage 77 Bandit TA is close to the $20k range

Sorry Ron, In lieu of having a running and driving Mopar this is the best I can do for now.  My 69 and 70 are a long way off.   :rotz:

I'm another closet Pontiac fan but I also would never trade that Charger for a 77 Trans Am.  Your wife is giving you some good advice.

Bandit4142

It will all come down o how much you need the money.   The Trans Am is a perfectly fine car from the pics, and yes, I too, own a 25th Anniver. T/A.   ;D   The 2nd gen Poncho's are rapidly rising in value right now, and I know of two 10ths that have sold here in Colorado, one for $36k and another that sold for $40k+.

Would I spend that on a T/A??  ........ um.... no.    But there are people out there who will drop the money.   Look at the people spending $250k on Cuda's??   That doesn't make sense to me either...

Like I said, its going to come down to how bad do you need the money...

I do not have to have the money. The new house we are looking at, is 4000 square feet. I want my ultimate game room. I already have a pool table. But I want a Star Wars arcade game, Flash Gordon Pinball machine, a bar, my 60" Plasma, . . .  the list goes on.

I had this car before I met my wife. We dated in this car. We . . . in this car. She does not want me to give it up for a little extra cash. I just have to wait a little longer on my other things. I have owned 6 Trans Ams in the past. Personally I like how they drive better than my Charger. They are fantastic cars. I think I will keep what I have and buy another Trans Am in a year or two. I feel that I will regret it down the road. These cars become a part of you. . . .Thank you all for your opinions. . . Tim

I often get the urge to trade my 68, but I would only consider other mopars.  I have always wanted and never owned a old mopar street rod 30s type.  If the T/A is the car you have always wanted it might be worth it, for me they would need pretty good money to go with the T/A.  GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DECISION.

Dude.... I hear and I understand. That TA is one of my favorite cars of all time and I WILL own one one day... but I would NEVER trade my Charger for one... in fact if you make this deal I will most likely have to fly in to where ever you are from NYC and beat you up...

So please, do the right thing and remove any thoughts of trading your Charger from your mind.
