When's the last time you saw pics of a wing car driving in normal traffic (or dare I say Jersey traffic) :o ? Doesn't happen often, but this badboy was spotted out and about. Ignore the urge to post about the gas price.  ;)

Gas prices seem a little cheaper there, well okay so a lot cheaper than they are here currently.

I need to check a disk I have at the house.  Somewhere I have a record of these early VIN cars, as they were assigned to one of the Chrysler factory-backed NASCAR drivers for a time.  My guess is I can post which of the driver's had that car at least for a while.  Might be a useless piece of trivia for most, but I'm interested in finding out - and it's not even my car...

Geno, you met the owner of this car. Nightime in Carlisle...hotel parking lot. Tall slim dude that browsed your scrapbook...that's him. John is the most downplayed owner of a wingcar I have ever met. When he mentions he owns one, most people shrug and say "cool". Reality is, they think he is just another mental patient that claims to own one. Little do they know what treasure he owns.  ;D

Ya gotta hit me over the head sometimes...  and here I wasn't even slugging down any of the Alexander Keiths, but still missed out on chatting up with yet another fellow mental patient - err - Daytona owner.  That car definitely looks like a treasure from those pictures (and from the other Chris' descriptions too).  Pass along my apologies for me, wouldya?

I met him at Englishtown last year, and he is definately a laid back gentleman. Then again Gene isn't too upity either.

Quite a few of the wing car owners are laid back, and easy going. There are the occasional stuck up wing car owners, but I haven't run accross too many that have had the cars for more than a few years.

I knew that was John's car. That has the most loaded with  options 440 daytonas I've come across. John supplied me with a copy of the build sheet to prove how optioned it is.

Well, I checked that disc I was looking for, and unfortunately the car was not in the group of cars I had a record of being assigned to one of the Chrysler-backed NASCAR drivers.  VERY close, but not part of the group.

The very next VIN past John's car was assigned to James Hylton.  The next 5 VIN's (six in total) were assigned to:
Buddy Baker
Neil Castles
Paul Goldsmith
Jim Foster
Bobby Isaac

From cross-checking the SO numbers, I can tell that John's car was assigned to Frank Wylie, who was involved in the development of the Daytona.  It was one of three cars assigned to him, or at least to a pool of cars he was responsible for.  They probably let various Exec's take their turn at the wheel, which is still very cool.  Unfortunately there's not a NASCAR driver tie-in as I had hoped...   :'(

As a matter of fact, two of them have been around lately.  They were not all the same color or equipped exactly the same, although I do suspect they were all fairly well optioned out.

Remember the burned & rusted Daytona that everyone cringed when we saw that the auction closed for $40k just in June?  That was the car assigned to NASCAR driver Neil "Soapy" Castles.

Was up in Minnesota this past weekend, just west of the Twin cities and saw a sublime green Bird going the opposite direction.  About had to pull my jaw back up through the floor.   It is nice to see any of those cars on the road.

Glad to help out, and I've sent you a PM reply too...

I am drawing a blank on what you're getting at with the turn signal block off plates though.  Is that on the hood-mounted turn signal indicators?

P.S  Dave/nascarxx29, according to Doug Schellinger, Bryson Hill hasn't owned that car since sometime around 1988 or so.  He spelled that out in the "I gotta question" thread I posted the link to earlier.  Wouldn't do much good to look him up now, more than likely.

Geno, yes the hood mounted turn signal block off plates. John's are spot welded on, and he said most of the later one's he has seen were bolted in...or something like that?  :shruggy:

Hmmm, another question for me to now start looking at on Daytona's at various shows. Now I'll have something else to go through pictures for too.

Gene I haven't forgot about your request for pictures either, just a little busy now. I'm actually get ready to head to Minnesota to tape a show tomorrow. Its about a 9 hour drive, and I am supposed to be there by 8 am tomorrow morning. Cutting a little close aren't I. 8 pm, 9 hours of driving, hmmmm, guess i'll sleep about 3 hours in a rest stop somewhere.
