I was reading a Moar Muscle about someone putting in a "6 pack Cam" Well I'm away from my books here in Korea but I remember reading that the lift and duration was the same for a "magnum vs 6 pack" cam? what say you guys?

Here's what I recall

- One size cam for low performance Big blocks
- A stright 383 4 bbl had smaller cam unless it was a "magnum" found in Super Bee and Runner.
- High perfomance cam was the same for all 383-440 magnums/Super commandos from '68-'72

Thanks

AK

Those are all I can find specs for.  The Mopar Performance catalog lists a separate 6 pack resto cam with a different part number but it's specs are shown the same as the Magnum/Super Bee cam.

That is correct....the magnum and 6 pak grinds are identical. The different part #'s represent the use of a single bolt (magnum) or 3 bolt (6 pack) upper timing gear.

I have the specs for the "Resto 440 six pack (69-71 models) offered from Mopar Performance
part # P4529270

And the "Resto 383/440 magnum super commando road runner" offered from Mopar Performance
part # P4452783

Both have the same specs , but the six pack cam has 3 cam gear mounting bolt holes

i put the resto 6-pack cam in my 71  9.7 cr 440 running 4:10 ,4-sp and a six pack about 16 yrs ago and it is a very good  cam in the low to 5800 rpm range. been thinking about using same cam in my just rebuilt 10.5 cr six pack  eldebrock head motor but still thinking about that. what do you guys think?

Ghoste

More airflow with those heads.  You might want to think about a little more aggressive cam to take advantage of it.

What's the rest of the combo...converter stall speed/rear gearing ? The resto cam is a little small for an e-headed 10.5:1 combo, inmo. You'd be leaving a lot on the table....the e-heads move a lot of air in the upper lift area and you want to take advantage of it.

Wow, so it is the same..well except for the bolt thing. I thought the 6 pack would have been bigger, so is the factory grind the one to go with for a mild street engine?

Where I'm going with this is I'm rebuilding (or will be when I get back) the 400 from my wife's '72 and was going to stay within F.A.S.T. requirents that the cam "sound stock" just trying to think of the best one to run with cast iron intake and maniolds

Thanks

jerry

ron, it will be hyd cam stock manifolds. with the 4:10 dana i am looking for low  and mid range torque and speed.just something good and dependable and i can probably get away with mopar heavy duty stamped 6 pack rockers and stock push rods running the alum heads.i know there are a lot of new cams on the market and that the 60s and 70s stuff is obsolete but this cam is probably all i need for a driver / show poodle.the reason for the alum heads housing and pump is to loose weight and gain some hp even though the stock engine runs very good.i think it is worth the money for heads.just trying to creep into todays tech  and still have somthing that will run on pump gas. i was going to send a couple pics of  car but i would need your email.jerry

AK, there are a lot of options and the right cam will depend on what you come up with for compression, rear end gearing etc...The 6 pack grind isn't the best choice for a low compression 400ci 2 ton car with a stock converter and 2.76 gears, inmo. We really need to know more about the drivetrain to make a proper recommendation.  ;)

Hi Jerry, the hydraulic cam and manifolds clears things up in terms of cam selection. The exhaust manifold type builds work better with a wider lsa cam specced for the build....less overlap produces increased scavenging with a restrictive type exhaust. The cam will need to be custom ground for the application but that's no big deal....just a few extra $. I would go with a custom Engle cam, k58 intake/ exhaust lobe ground on a 112* lsa. The idle will be descent and make tuning the 6pack a snap. The shorter seat timing of the Engle grinds really helps with the streetability of these cams.  :yesnod:

Here's what it would look like on paper :

276* in/276*ex advertised
230*in/230*ex @.050 valve lift
.520in/.520 ex lift @ 1.5:1 RR
112* lsa installed on a 108* ICL (advanced 4*)

This grind would work fine with the stock e-head valvesprings so there's no need to upgrade, which is a bonus. All you'd need is a good set of chrome moly pushrods and the HD stamped MP rockers.  ;)

Good luck with your project.  :icon_smile_cool:
