I have listened to Bob and Tom for 20 years , they are based in my home town,
sometimes they are good sometimes just OK.
A lot of it has to to with the FCC  I liked it better before the rules became so restrictive.
Also I when to school with Christy Lee their newscaster so I might be a bit biased  ;)
Did listen to Howard when he was on locally and didnt care for him.

Like I said, just based on the fact that they're a "(enter common name) and (enter common name)". That usually means neither one of them is funny enough to have their own radio show.

Howard's true talent is that he surrounded himself with very good people. Do you really think he would have gotten as far as he has on his own?  :rotz:

Howard Stern -  ::)

Is he still around?

I thought he reached his peak 1996.

I thought his audience was 14 - 17 year old boys.   :shruggy:

Not really a fan of Stern.  He was on one of the stations here in Charlotte for a while and lasted maybe a year before lack of advertising and listeners pretty much ended his tenure here.  We have three radio shows here which are quite popular.  Bob and Sheri which is quite popular with women, John Boy and Billy which is quite popular with rednecks.  Those two are based here in Charlotte.  Bob and Tom is the third popular morning show here and is the one I listen to when I'm not listening to NPR.  They always have some good comics on there and one of the guys on the show (Chick McGee) is very funny.  Having listened to both, I can't really say they're Stern Clones.  I think they're pretty different from Stern, actually.

Yea, because he's just plain nasty and not very funny either. He's also known for biting the hand that feeds him, always trashing his listeners and guests, not the way to get real places in this world (or the next one), he displays no humility whatsoever...I have listened to Stern enough (co-workers years ago and I couldnt turn it off) to know what his humor is like. I got real tired of his high school Bevis and Butthead crap. Got really tired of his yes (wo)man kiss up Robin, and that idiot kiss up Babba Booey. Sterns only good moment came when I heard him interview and trash Tina (Ginger Grant) Louise and he kept annoying her with Gilligan questions. Bob & Tom may not always be funny (but then who is? even the legendary Don Knotts wasnt always) but at least (most) of their humor is clean and often real funny. A clone of Stern? not even close, their formats/styles are so different...I like everyone on there except maybe Tom (pretentious ivy league snob), Chick is funny, Kristy is a nice voice of reason among the other nuts and even Bob (he can be dirty) but usually keeps it fairly clean. They also have some of the best comedians guests on pretty regularly; Jim Gaffigan, Frank Caliendo, Brian Regan etc...We'll forgive them for having Bob Zany on too much.
Stern oughta hang it up and work in some late night adult movie store off a lonely interstate where we can all forget about him.

One thing for sure is, most, if not all, of the so called "comedy" radio shows, wouldn't be on the air with the type of format they have if it weren't for Howard Stern. You don't have to be a fan of Stern to acknowledge the fact he's been very successful at what he did. His show may not be "clean" by certain people's standards or taste, but he did create a market that wasn't there before. He's had some very funny people as writers on the show, & whether he wrote material or not, he made it very funny on the air. (My opinion at least.)

I had been listening to Stern back in the 1980's when he was on in the afternoons on NBC. I hated the radio, but I hated being stuck in traffic in NYC even more & I'd spin the dial looking for something to ease the traffic pain. It took me a while to realize what Stern was doing, because the station had their own format that included weather, traffic reports & news. To hear something totally different from what was the same routine over, & over, & over, was great. Teasing the helicopter reporter was hysterical. Who gives a rat's ass about a traffic report? It's effin' traffic & no different than yesterday's or last year's traffic.

All of the radio shows on now make my hair hurt. I hate the radio & could care less if I ever hear it again. The news is boring, the weather is more accurate by sticking your head out of the window, the pop music that's computer generated just plain sucks, the commercials make me want to slit my throat & there isn't anything original being broadcast anymore. I have enough CD's to keep me occupied & can buy more if I have to. If that doesn't work there's always those thoughts in my head I can tune in on. (Nothing illegal either.)

I have listened to Bob and Tom for 15 years. I have seen them in concert. And have even met them. They have been together in Indianapolis since the early to mid 80's. I have recently stopped listening to them. The material has gotton so old. They are still playing bits from 1990. I remember hearing stuff the first time around, when I was in middle school. And then about six weeks ago Bob called President Bush a "big douche bag". And that was it for me. They slam him everyday. And I finally had enough. And since I do not agree with them. I told myself I was not going to listen anymore. And I have not. To be honest I do not miss them one bit.

As a side note, I have a bunch Bob and Tom cd's and a couple autographed pictures if any fans of theirs are interested.

I hate most of everything on the radio these days.  It's become McRadio since the FCC let a couple of big brands buy out virtually all the stations.  This radio situation isn't pleasing any of the listeners, it's just making commercial sh*t popular by controlling listeners' options & eliminating all their better choices.

. . . And then when everyone switches to satellite radio and traditional free radio loses all its market share, the corporations in control will act surprised.

So we'll all be paying monthly fees.  We'll tell ourselves we're paying to get "better" radio, but half the reason we get out our wallets will be to control the amount of ads we have to sit through and to try to get the kind of decent radio that we were originally getting for free.  (Just like with free TV, and cable, and premium channels, and the ever-increasing infomercials.  It's pretty hilarious that there are actually supposed to be federal laws limiting the number of ads per hour that TV channels can run.)

Man, life gets more expensive all the time, doesn't it?

I agree with most of what you're saying except for the part where you say we're paying for decent radio that we were originally getting for free. The thing I like about satellite is that on any given day, I can tune to the Rolling Stones station and they'll be playing some deep cuts or bootlegs that I have never heard before, turn to the country station and hear David Allan Coe's underground stuff, and then turn to the metal station and hear some hardcore Icead Earth or Napalm Death shit - stuff that terrestrial radio (for a variety of reasons) never has and never would touch with a ten foot stick. Subscription fee = no commercials. No commercials = no pressure to stick to a certain format or censor content in order to appeal to certain demographics. And that's why satellite radio is far superior.

I can't even stand to listen to regular radio nowadays with all the commercials and the same songs played over and over again. That's expected of Top 40 radio...but how many times can a human being hear "reeling in the years" or "go your own way" on the classic radio stations before going insane?

We get Bob and Tom out here as well.  I enjoy their programming.  I used to enjoy Howard as well.  But he isn't on free radio and I am too cheap to pay for it.  I am not always in the mood for a morning show, so i tend to flip around.  Bob and Tom are humorous at times and I enjoy their programing when I listen to it.  BTW I think Chick is a huge part of the show.

We have another station, TK99 that has Gomez and Dave on.  This is just a local radio show and like Bob and Tom they pretty funny most of the time.  It is nice to have skits and jokes with events you are familiar about.  With two decent morning shows in my area (central new york) you can usually find something worth listening too.  However we have another morning show which pretends to be local but are syndicated as well, Beener and Ken.  They are just not funny.  >:( If anyone is a Howard rip off it is them.  I heard a rumor they are not even in the same city as each other for most broadcasts.  I am waiting to see how much longer they last.

Now for a good night show, Alice Cooper Nights is the best.  :punkrocka:  If you get it in your area, you can't go wrong.  It is simply awesome for those long nights in the garage; you can set the dial and leave it.  And it is clean too, so your kids can listen as well.

Do you mean Kevin and Bean? They were an L.A. show and got syndicated a few years ago. One of them does the show in L.A. and the other does it from his farm in Washington state. They're pretty blatant Howard rip-offs too.
