I may be changing the look of "Mr Angry" - need your thoughts.

Hey guys -

I am going through a viseral crises here. Most you know what my Charger looks like in it's current state, but I am thinking of changing it up a little bit and getting away from the pro-tour for awhile look and heading down the NASCAR path. Plus I am setting the car up more for handling now and the different size wheels that I currently have on the Charger 17's/18's are not optimum for handling.

I am not going to do anything that is irrevesbile, but I like the fact that I may be able to change the whole look and feel of the car in the span of 1 hours time.

Here's what I'm thinking -

- black 17" NASCAR basset style wheels (if I can find them in that size) - I need them to clear the 13" rotors in the front
- 17x8's front / 17x10's rear with white lettered Goodyear stenciled on the sidewalls
- satin black 6-pack style fiberglass hood clear coated w/hood pins
- small custom trunk lip spoiler

These changes are minor but can really change the look and feel of the car... basically I want this!

Opinions please - thanks - Mike

plum500

Sounds good to me.

What have you got on there for exhaust tips...they welded on? -- something not tapered in a natural finish -- or just the pipes for that matter, might suit what you are going for better too.

Blown70

HMMM,  I really like to look now but it is your car and maybe the change would look good too.

Tom

NYCMille

Blown70

Hey PLUM could you photoshop on some of those steelies?

Tom

plum500

...just wanted to do a quick search of some that could be put right on with a couple of resizes, rotates, smudges and blurs...you know me and my time skills ...:)

This doesn't reflect reducing the back from 18 to 17 or any stance change...  -- just pasted over existing rims....

Brock Samson

 Dom,  ;D
Since your missing the side water drip rails it looks kind'a stripped there,.. badass for sure but plain.. IMO..
I like where your going on this though... I think the wheel rim needs to be chromed at least...
rear spoiler is a great idea to match the front.

NYCMille

oooh... I'm liking this A LOT!...

I'm thinking the rear lip spoiler will powercoated black, not a bushed steel... Can you polish the very outer lip of a steel wheel? Would this pic be better to photoshop?

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

Gentlemen... design the perfect nascar replica Charger - let's see what we can come up with!

plum500

One more... Here's what I meant by the tail pipes -- I'll do a quick polished ring around the wheels in a second... then I have to get back to work :D

Edit: Just tried to throw a ring around the wheels - didn't work so well, but it may be the pic and the way I'm doing it. That side on shot would be easier for that -- take a polished rim and combine with black steelies. Dunno.

From a distance and the quick chop, I like all black -- the polished rim might have a "white walled" look to it from a distance...

I think the white (Goodyear) lettering would help alot with the appearance.

NYCMille

Blown70

Mike,

I too think it maybe too plain?  I like those wheels, what you gunna do with them...

Thanks FRED for doing the photoshop.

Tom

Brock Samson

I'd do the pipes nascar style, pokin back from just ahead of the rear tires.

NYCMille

plum500 - BIG THANKS!

This is coming along very nicely... I was looking at the Basset wheels but they only come in 15's... what about a custom of billet NASCAR style steelies.. say 17's or 18's power coated black.

Brock - the side exit exhaust would be killer, maybe some oval tubing with Mercedes G55 AMG exhaust tips.

Brock Samson

i'd keep it all biz. all those tipps would look too much IMO...

  EDIT:

A spoiler lip of Carbon Fiber would look pretty effin cool...  :icon_smile_wink:

another thought/s is a T/A hoop scoop and also concider Mini-light wheels... (though Some folks don't like 'em I hear...  :icon_smile_dissapprove:)

Cool idea! I think it will make for an interesting car.
Definitely would benefit from some white letter tires.

I think because of the angle ot was taken at, that first picture evokes the term "pony car" when I look at it. Very T/A or AAR looking. Especially the front half of the car.

4forty

I wouldn't change anything, your car is incredible as is....but the the old-style nascar look is very cool!

Stockton Wheel could make you some wheels to your personal specs.  I love the NASCAR/Roadrace look. Thats the way I'm going w/my 70' R/T. Maybe Steelies w/dogdish caps or customized 70' Roadwheels?  Just my  :blahblah: :Twocents:

BTW, Love your car Bro.  :2thumbs:  Can't wait to see the new look.  :icon_smile_big:

Thanks Man.

What does everyone think of this? Would you do it or not... remember, there is nothing that could not be undone - wheels and hood and could swapped out in an hour - the exhaust and deck lid spoiler would be permanent though.

ds440

First and foremost, I wouldn't change a thing - your car is beautiful.

But, here's my attempt (looks like 4forty beat me to it ;D):
- I placed the car on a white backgroud, so it's not so distracting.
- I tried bigger tires, but I couldn't get it to look right, so I just placed some Goodyear logos on there.
- Only went with one side exhaust - I thought two might be a bit much, and I checked a reference shot with the K&K car (which had only one).
- Got rid of your antenna, but you know it's still there. ;)
- Hard to get the six pack hood to look right, b/c I didn't have any profile shots for reference.

Do/can the mufflers sit in the same position if the exhaust is coming out the side? -- could fabricate a setup so you could easily bolt on whatever set of pipes you felt like running.

NYCMille

First off, thanks to everyone who replied to this thread - this is really cool.

Plum500 - YOU A PHOTOSHOP MASTER! THANK YOU! - it really does bring up some ideas.

DS440 - big thanks to you also, it's great to see everyone's renditions.

I really like the ARR style front air dam, really nice touch as is the rear spoiler - not too crazy, just enough to make everyone take a second look. It seems you thinned out the 6-pack scoop which is also a nice touch. As for the exhaust, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to run a cut-out exhaust system and set it up with bolt-up flanges and gaskets to run either a side or rear exit, you could probably fab it up and just keep the hangers in place.

It's amazing how some subtle alterations can change the whole look and feel of the car. We went from Pro-touring to MAD MAX to NASCAR all in one thread. Really great.

Again - thanks for all this guys :yesnod:, I love this board - MIKE

It looks good but I think your car is bad ass as is and I wouldn't change a thing or change the simple stuff so you can always switch back to the current look.  I'd be heart broke to see you change the car but IT'S YOURS so do whatever you like.  I would like a price for your curent rims if you do make the swap.....

This look is the best if you have to change your car.  I agree with a few others, I wouldn't touch it, but I like 4forty's the best, but you would have to lose the stripes on the rear to make it look killer but then it's not able to be undone anymore.  my question is, in your first pic, is that what your grill looks like now or did you photo that in there?

I'd ditch the hood scoop and the stripes if you want the NASCAR look. IMO the widened steel wheels would best suit the sixties racecar look. Love the spoilers and the side exhaust.  :yesnod:

Thanks guys for all the replies... I showed the pics to my wife last night and she walked out of the room... pissed commenting that she would not ride in the car if I changed it up. Then I showed the thread to my partner, he basically called me a smuck and said he would not permit me to go backwards and the reigns must be pulled back on my enthusiasm.

My wife then said that if I wanted a Charger like this that I should sell my 69 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ and just build another Charger... hmm. Fact is I really like the Nascar look.

Dunno what to do. ???

just an idea  sell the pontiac ,and then build a propper  nascar  replica charger 500  using the re popped parts. i can see it now black paint  the same suspension and braking as on your 68 , the widest black bassett nascar wheels you can fit , big HEMI with a manual box and 2:76:1 gears , lowered etc etc  :drive:

Even though I sort of like the racecar look, I think the car is nearly perfect "as is" and you'd be going backwards by messing with it. I am going through the same predicament with mine - but it is a blank slate since it's not finished yet. In the end, I'll probably stick with something less subdued and more of a sleeper since that's the style I've always loved. I have the advantage of owning 4 cars though so I can have multiple styles without having to compromise. :D

I'm not sure about that grille....... Why don't you try and make it look like a 69 Charger 500? Dayclona makes the bracket package or you can make the brackets yourself. I did on two of mine.......... You can get a 68 Coronet grille most anywhere... I like the look of the black steelies...............

Mike that's a cool idea, but I have to admit that your car is awesome as it is!! The guy down in Georgia that I bought my 68 from was into NASCAR and was going to convert my Charger into a NASCAR looking Charger too, i.e the black rims with white letter tires. I'm glad he lost interest in doing that and decided to sell instead. It would have been pretty bad to convert the number matching R/T to a NASCAR Charger - yikes!! But I do like your thought and idea. It sure would be interesting seeing it on the fast lane on Southern State flicking the lights to move cars out of the way!!! :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_wink:

Anyday you can ditch a Pontiac for a $$ to buy a Mopar IS A GOOD DAY and when the wife gives you the "go ahead" its a no brainer !  I would hate to see that car changed.  I can understand wanting to switch things up though.  I have wanted to repaint mine for about a year but I can't decide which way to go with it.  Johnathan aka: Eastcoast Chargers said he could help me with the paint and I really would want someone with his skill behind the gun so I was building the funds to have him tackle it.  Then last week I stumbled across a black/black, stripe delete, 4spd, 440 RT car that i can get for a great price.  Now I have a hard decision....I can stay on track with mine and paint.... or I can unload the Sublime machine and pick up this RT and have almost enough $$ to finsih a really nice optioned car.
I brought this to my wifes attention and she wasn't real happy either.  She also suggested sellling off some of my other toys and having two Chargers.  So, i asked a few other people and they all flamed me for even considering selling mine.....
Not trying to jack your thread there just explaining my problem and how having the "wanna change it up" bug can suck.

This ticket is only $69.00 ?  If I'd have known that I'd have been going FASTER !

plum500

It's definitely a bug with the obvious solution of having more than one Charger. I've been trying to wrap a happy medium of all things into my '71 project and the plans change daily. I'll settle on something...then see something else, go "wow", hmm... then see something else...

Ahhhh to have more time, money, and the space :)

BTW: Great Price means Buy it.  ;D

NYCMille

SuBLimE 69 - DUDE! - I love your car... the sublime green looks awesome on the Charger, I wouldn't change it... although, I do know where your coming from.

SuBLimE 69

Oh NO !  I was gonna repaint it Sublime.  It just needs a repaint if I decide to show it.  That paint has been on there awhile and she has suffered a few door dings and chips....the black engine bay pisses me of everytime i look at it too.  She is a hella sexy 10 footer but no show car.

The R/T is a 69.  Straight body, orig motor and trans.  Two owner car and both owners were related.  The window sticker and broadcast sheet are supposed to be in a file cabnet somewhere but I havent actually seen them yet.  Hasn't ran since the early 80s and was last registered in 1981.  It's been stored in a nice dry basement/garage and the body in nice and straight.  There was even mail in the glove box dated 1981.  It's the perfect car for a "correct" resto if the paper workis located but I just don't want to unload the green car.  I could always buy it and watch it sit in my garage due to lack of funds i quess but we all hate those people.  I'd spend a ton on the resto since the car really needs to be done correct and that would be the reason I'd have to unload the green one.

Now I promise to stop jacking the thread but if ya'll see the green car on eBag don't flip out.  it just means I bought another one.

Nah Mike, You gotta keep it the way it is man.

I've loved that triple black '68 ever since seeing it in Hot Rod 10 years ago.  Loved it then, love it even more now.  It was one of the reasons why mine is black with a black vinyl top now.

However, your car is unique enough as it is, I'd probably just leave it.  It's hard to improve on how stunning your '68 is.  The rims, the stripe, the stance, and the paint are just an awesome overall package.

How attached are you to the Grand Prix?  I love Pontiacs too, and wouldn't mind a '65 Bonneville or '69 GTO...

NYCMille- You should do what you want with your car.  It's not like you can't switch it back later.  I don't know if you remember me, but I asked about the front (camaro) spoiler you put on your car.  I have been working on my 68 for about a year - NASCAR theme and all.  It's working out pretty good for my situation. 1).  I am just a poor city worker with 2 little kids.  It is far cheaper to paint my ratty bumpers gloss black than to re-chrome.  2). Black steel wheels are way cheaper - I bought 6 black steel wheels (4) have my street tires and now I have 2 matching rims with MT drag slicks mounted for weekend drag races.  3).  I'm putting in a roll bar and 5-point harness for drag racing anyway, but it helps with the NASCAR look.  4).  Figured I will get the car on the road with gutted interior for now, and I will search for nice interior stuff during winter ebay / swap meet deals.  Once again - gutted interior = Nascar look.  5). I have always liked how the exhaust pipes exit in front of the old challengers back tires - Nascars have similar exhaust set up.  Here is a pic of mine before I welded in the subframe connectors.  I think your car will look great either way.

Anyway I was just thinking about the whole nascar thing (which I really dig) and the other thing I could think of adding are those black slats like the Boss's had but tucked in between the sail pans following the ridge down to the trunk.

Charger rear window slats were listed in the J.C. Whiney Catologe intill the mid-80s they wen't actually in stock and I've never seen one but I allways thought that would be a bitchen add on myself, and to add one as an actual intrigal mod. would lead to window washing problems but look bitchen.
I agree with Frank, a NASCAR style front wheel well would be in my all time

I am going to make some radius wells and convert  my old fenders into a set of Nascar style ones when I replace them. I also think at some point I am going to
put in one of those aftermarket front ends with a dropped spindle, so I can swap fenders once in a while as I feel like it and go from 'stock' to 'racy'.

my old fenders are a little 'soft' from 2 much sheetmetal work, so its no great loss...but perfect candidates for experimentation.

What ever happened to the '69 you bought from one of the members? Inquiring minds want to know.   :D
Malicious, vindictive, spiteful, cynical, pessimistic, sarcastic, & antagonistic. And those are my good traits!

"ours go to 11."

"why not just make 10 the loudest?"

"Yes, but ours go to 11"

You're speakin' my language.....

AWESOME look, but I'd can the Six Pack hood for some NASA scoops.  Won't break up the stealthy, sleek look that the flat Charger hood has.  I'd put the NASA scoops rearward of the nacell indents where the blinkers are.   Or just use the same NASCAR air cleaner that feed off the base of the windshield.   IMO, the single side pipe looks best.  Like the Goodyear on the tires, too.

MAN what a way to bring back an old thread. BUT I gotta say, I'm GLAD Mike never did this stuff to Mr Angry and decided to do another car.

Mr Angry is THE coolest Dodge Charger I have EVER seen!  I LOVE that thing!  I think it is THE epitome of the 68-70 Charger as far as how they SHOULD look.
I've owned some cool ones, and seen some really nice cars, I know people with REALLY nice Chargers, and NONE can compare to that black beauty!

To me that is THE CAR!!!!

Thanks for leaving that one alone!!!!!!!!!    :yesnod: :yesnod:
