How rare is...... (1968)

Boo me if you like, but I just bought another Charger today (here in town even) and it has a paint code for SS1 (a light yellow).  How rare is that?  It was a 318, three on the tree (missing the transmission), last registered in 1973 and had a Texas dealer emblem on the back.  It has the remains of a tic-tock-tack (very rough) and the body is almost rust free (top has some small holes and the trunk floor is rusty).  This was the one on ebay and racingjunk.......

Congrats on your new car! :icon_smile_big:
My car came with the same paint code.  I have no idea how rare it is.  ???
When the 68 registry was online, I don't think there was one registered.

Yup, mine still had some of the original paint under the trim and it is the same light yellow colour as you're pics.  :yesnod:

Yep, that be the color, except that it is a base model 318 so no rump stripe.  There is a european guy that has a modified SS1 up on his website that I found today.  According to the fender tag info on my car, it used to have a gold interior (now completely missing so there goes the buildsheet).  It was sitting for 33 years according to the tags, so that is why it has just minor rust underneath.  The trunk floor, gas tank, roof and some of the floor pans have minor rust holes, but not nearly as bad as I thought.  The pictures on ebay make it look a lot worse than it is.  The windshield is busted, but that can easly be fixed with $.  The grille is perfect save for one crack on the mounting bolt on the passinger side headlight cover.  All chrome is good and should be brought back with a good polish.  Since I collect the oddballs, this is one I just could not pass up (I wander how rare it really is?.....).  The engine might be the orginal one, but I did not mess with it today as I was short on time and needed to get back to my research project.  It came with a correct air cleaner and a box of even more parts that he had dug out of the trunk.  The paint on it is the orginal applied at the factory (save for the rattle can on the passinger door).  I plan on getting this one back on the road and making a driver out of it (and keep it orginal at the same time).  The orginal 2.94 rear end is still underneath so gas mileage might not be so bad.  I don't remember there being a SS1 at the TDC meet but there might have been.  Man, I wish he would have had it for sale six months ago so that I could have had it rolling for the meet!  Luckly, I have a nice 68 hood sitting in my storage place just waiting for a new home (and I was debating selling it to free up space).......

Dave (the guy I bought it from) did not know the history of the car, since he bought it as a package deal to get the chevy convertible he wanted.  I bet that this would probably only have 50,000 miles on it or so and not driven during the winter up here (due to lack of major rust in the quarters).  The trunk floor rusted out in spots, but that is common for sitting so long.  I asked Dave to see if he can find out what the guy might know about the car.  I think it was being used as a parts car back in the day, as that would explain the missing interior and transmission.  I don't know why they left the tic-tock-tack in the car though (maybe it did not work?).  I will be going back there tomarrow to get some better pics and I will take one of the dealer emblem on the back........

Well, I had to give twice that to get him to end the auction on ebay, but it was worth it in my opinion.....

what's up with the tailights?..  :-\

The lenses are just installed inside out. They can be put back to right.

That color really isn't all that rare. Many have been painted other colors by now.

Congrats! Nice score. Love that color w/a black top & interior. Good luck with it. :2thumbs:

Hey! The bottom picture is of my car.  I forgot about that one.  I'll need to post a new picture now that I finally got the new redlines on.  It looks great with them.  Just like it would have looked on the showroom floor in '68.     Bob

Hey Chad,
I am looking at your fender tag and notice that there is not a code for a mirror.   Does this car have a standard, non remote mirror?  If so, what does the upper door pad look like where the remote knob should go?  This is like my 68 on the fender tag.  Just curious.  Thanks.  Kevin in Nebraska

Chad L. Magee

Kevin-  It has just the standard, non-remote side mirror (the glass is missing, but the housing is there).  I wish I could help you further, but the upper door pads (along with the rest of the interior) is currently missing.  I would expect that this would be just like yours for that part though.  Does your car have d4 on the fender tag by chance?.....

Edit: the tag has b4 instead of d4.......

I don't have a D4.  I looked at some of the ones I have pictured and can't tell you.  I will look a little deeper.

Hey Chad, that looks like a very decent car to start with, & shows that there are still some good deals out there to be found. Congrats on getting it. :2thumbs:

Nice score Chad.  A buddy of mine has a 69 painted that color but I'm pretty certain his is not the original color.  In any case, that's a great deal no matter what color it is.

CaptMarvel

Thats the factory color of my 68 R/T. I'm pretty sure I'm going back with it when I get around to painting it (this yr?)

thanks for the info Chad  on the dealer name , looking forward on seeing pictures on the resto of the charger as you progress

I got the fender tag off of the car and finally got it scanned into my computer.  The tag is going into my fireproof safe along with the dealer emblem.  I took pictures of the car but I need to get them developed yet (my digital camara is broken so I used a cheape).  Thanks for the input guys, as I want to document this one really well before I begin working on it.  I have only heard of two other Chargers with this engine/trans combo before (owned by the same guy nonetheless), but it is mentioned as being avalible in the literature of the day.  There must be more deals out there, but hiding for others to find.......
