I am running into a proportionality problem, I think.  I have some nice bricks that I am using for a patio.  They are 11.5 by 3.5 rectangles.  They are not proportionally correct in that 3.5 does not divide into 11.5 without a remainder.  So is there some trick to find a pattern that will let me lay the bricks with the fewest cuts (and looks nice)? Yes...buy proportionally correct bricks. :icon_smile_tongue:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Sounds like 1/2" of mortar between the bricks should fix your math.

You will have to lay out 23 3.5" lengths before you will equal 7 11.5" lengths.  does that help?

That does help (how did you figure that?).  Now I have to figure some sort of pattern, but to be honest, the area I am filling would prevent a pattern using that many bricks.  But I do have a great 14 inch diamond chop saw to cut them up so that, at least, is not an issue.   I started doing a herringbone type pattern that has a kind of zig zag at its core with 3/16 spacers and, with some modification, it looks like it will be pleasing. Thanks for the help, Kim.

Sounds like they'd be ideal for a herringbone pattern.

Check out this page for some patterns and instructions on how to lay it out.

I think the 3:1 pattern would suit the bricks that you have.

3:1 on a 90 degree

Cool, I decided on a herringbone but since the bricks are not 3:1 the edges wander a bit.  Here is what it looks like so far.  Kim

Looks good. It looks like your bricks would work fine in a 3:1.

Maybe adjust the spacing a bit, but that outside edge is angling in on you.


Edit: I see what you mean now. the first "column" onthe left looks like it's narrowing. It looks like there isn't enough room for a full brick in there.
I would probably try and adjust that out and make up the difference on the outer edge.

Are you gonna leave the umbrella base there permanently, with a hole in the bricks to slide the pole into?
