Pa has the 2nd highest Gas tax in the U.S. ( behind Cali) but the worst roads. No jobs that pay in Southwestern Pa. . Plus there is a fine and fee for EVERYTHING here.

"Hi If you are interested in moving to NC and like old cars and mopars I will sell you my place. I am less than a hour from Charlotte live in the mountains and 3 Miles off I40 have a 8 acre Licenced Classic car Salvage yard with many mopars and lots of mopar parts, House, 1 50x30 garage , 1 50x50 garage, many storage buildings, 1 Rollback, 1 wrecker, about 1000 cars, and I would say much more I am forgeting I will take $400.000 for it or ?. I would like to move to Tenn. no property taxes there."

Sounds like a sweet deal but I'm retiring. I believe from the postings there are quite a few areas that are overburdened with unrealistic taxes. 37% of the Pa budget goes toward welfare programs. Unreal! I am looking for rural living just outside a small town. I have never been a city person. Privacy is number one.
I guess with a straw hat, bibbed overalls, an old Mopar, and a dog named Clyde I could blend in pretty good in NC  :smilielol:. I allready have the old Mopar. That's what I'm looking for. Oh yea, and cheap cost of living.

There is good with bad everywhere.  Taxes in Allegheny County ( Pittsburgh ) PA are pretty high but surrounding counties are very reasonable.  300k will get you a heck of alot more than a starter home.  The property values here are way under the Natl. average.  I'm extremely happy here in Southwestern PA.  Just like anywhere, you've got to find the place that suits your needs.

What part of PA are you from 400 Big Block?

1970440RT,
I'm 6 miles south of Gettysburg. What contributes to the high cost is that I'm only 1 mile from the Maryland line. We have a lot Marylanders moving in because it is much cheaper than Md. I just sold a house recently and it was Marylanders. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming out of stater's for the high cost but when you have, for example, 10 houses for sale and 20 buyers, the cost just went through the roof for housing. There are families offering 10 to 20% over asking price just to ensure they get the house. Our school taxes are 35.25 mil's of half the assessed value. So a 100K home, your school tax is $1,762.50 not including all the other local taxes. We even have a "privilege to work" tax. :ahum:

That seems to be happening everywhere but here.  Getting asking price is a crapshoot at best in this area.  Everywhere esle I have family and freinds, California, Chicago, D.C., Dallas etc.,  what you are saying holds true.  People are literally running into open houses to be the first ones to put an offer in.  My sister and her husband are retiring and moving back here from San Jose because property is so reasonable around here.  Selling their one story, three bedroom house out there buys 30 acres out here.  ( she is retiring at 35 by the way.  I hate her. )  I feel for you on the taxes though, mine are similar.
